Connor Ire (98.204.234.114) -

Hey, I'm a 25 year old male, living in Washington DC. I work as a cook and I have a hospitality degree. I speak enough Spanish to communicate in a kitchen.

My mother is willing to put up 3000 dollars for me to travel. I'd like to try Montevideo because its a modern city with high literacy and standard of living, and a distinct culinary style.

Would I be able to get a job in Montevideo that pays enough for me to eat and pay rent? How long could I live on 3000 with the most meager accomodations? I would like to spend a year there if humanly possible.

Hi Connor,

Renting can be difficult as a foreigner. You need to find an owner who will accept a deposit. They will ask for at least 5 months in advance!!

Otherwise they need a guarantee, in the form of another property!

You can rent a 1 bed place in Pocitos for about 9000 pesos plus expenses (called gastos commuunes). So budget about 10K for rent not including bills.

5 months deposit of a 9K place will set you back 45000 pesos. That's about 2000 dollars to start.

You might be able to start teaching, in Berlitz maybe. You'll need papers to start working. It takes a while.

So 3K will not go far.

You might look for shorter term rentals. In 2005 I rented a 1 br apt for US$345 (including gastos comune) in Pocitos for 3 months. There was a 2 month deposit.

Later in 2005 I rented a 2 br apt on the Rambla (1 block from Espana) in Pocitos for US$450/Month + $2, 200 pesos gastos comune (which went up almost $3, 000 pesos a month including heat). The lease was for 6 months with a 3 month deposit. I renewed the lease and stayed for over 18 months. The rent never changed.

Both were furnished apartments.

You might not find rents for these prices now.... but you can use it to make your own judgment of the actual inflation rate here.

I found it much easier to locate and rent furniture apartments and little difference in the prices and more flexibility in the deposits. Others don't seem to have had the same experiences.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2503
