| uruguay medical systemHi! Health care, private and public, is outstanding in Uruguay. Facilities are outstanding, the cost is moderate, and the quality is great. No "problema" here! Take care. |
| Hi Wallace, I've heard good things about health care here and that the prices are affordable, but there are many expats that aren't fluent in Spanish and want to have more complex procedures explained to them by English speaking practitioners. There doesn't seem to be many places to go for English speaking doctors, just the British Hospital. Can you recommend any other places? I also don't know if I could really agree with this statement: "The health coverage information will apply to most of the country, but I will refer specifically to Maldonado and Montevideo since they are what I know first hand." Although healthcare is good in the capital and in well developed areas in Maldonaldo its definitely lacking in the interior and further up the Rocha coast. |
| I never found the Doctors at the British Hospital to be anymore fluent in English than elsewhere. The receptionists do seem to be fluent in English. There also seems to be questions about at what age they don't service you anymore. |
Comment #308/11/09 18:01Rural east Colonia departmento | I can confirm that the two mutualistas we have in east Colonia (CAMEC and Evangelico) both offer prompt and excellent service. CAMEC keeps my local policlinico open 24/7, has an ambulance on stand-by overnight, does rural house calls for 3 U$S, can usually offer next day service to see a specialist and has never kept me waiting more than 20 minutes to see a doctor when I appear unannounced at the policlinico morning surgery. The only drawback is that no English is spoken Patrick. |
| I think this is all just special service for you out there in Colonia - favouritism! Maybe I should consider a move out westward? |
| Some have expressed concerned that they cannot get medical "insurance" because they are "fat". |
Comment #608/13/09 16:15Rural east Colonia departmento | Colonia is a fairly wealthy departmento and people like to make donations to extend/improve their local medical services so I suppose we are better off than most. Over the past 3 years we've been raising money for a brand new CAMEC policlinico in Colonia Valdense and the foundations were completed last week.Unlike state or corporate owned medical systems the mutualistas are owned by their subscribers and said subscribers have input into how the system is operated. In my view having a system to which the users have input can only be a good thing. |
