| eye surgery in Uruguay or Chile? My mother is living in Montevideo and needs cataract surgery. I'd like to make sure she gets the best medical care for such a high-stakes operation. During a recent trip to Santiago I noticed that Chile appears to have more modern technology, perhaps due to lower import duties. I wonder if this would apply to eye surgery tools as well, including the most recent corneal lens technology. If you were going to get eye surgery done, would you do it in Santiago or Montevideo? Thank you for your opinions, David |

Chile is not known in the Uruguay as a regional medical center. Wherever there is some specialty that is not covered here, people use to go to Buenos Aires, or the US. For laser eye operations, Buenos Aires used to be the place to go in the nineties and early 2000s. But some years ago the MSP opened an eye specialized hospital with new equipment and Cuban training. Cuba is a reference center for cataract operations, they sent a lot of specialists and they gave handson training to the Uruguayan profesionals. The new hospital has made thousands of (free) cataract operations by now. And probably some of those newly trained profesionals have now open private clinics by now. I haven't heard of anyone traveling abroad for a cataract operation since then. |

I am a physician and last year I was an outpatient in the British Hospital in Montevideo for an orthopedic problem. I found the attending physician first class as were all the facilities and staff. The clinic was modern, clean and efficient. Based on my experience, I would not hesitate to have cataract surgery there. |

My SO has been diagnosed with cataracts recently so he visited a specialist at our local hospital in Rosario. As a paying "socio" with CAMEC, he has the option of getting the operations done for free at Rosario with plain lenses or to pay 3k U$S to get it done in MVD where they would insert corrective lenses. The Italian hospital in Bs As wants 4k U$S for the same op. |

Thank you all for your opinions. That's really interesting to hear about the eye-specialized hospital with Cuban training, as well as the price difference for an operation between MVD and Bs As.I'm glad to know there's good medical care here. Cheers. |
