| Questions: Should I visit Uruguay? I plan on doing a medical internship in Argentina (Buenos Aires) for 2 months. After that I will one month of break. I plan to visit all of Chile and Argentina. Is it worth visiting Uruguay during my visit since it is so close to Buenos Aires. |

It really depends on what tickles your fancy.BA is the major city with 13 million people, in a country of 40 million. Montevideo is the major city with 1.5 million people, in a country of 3 million. That pretty much tells the story. Well, not really. The population of Buenos Aires are proud of being the "Paris of South America" and their pride often shows up. People in Uruguay tend to have a more simple view of life and are a little more matter-of-fact about their country. As an expat from the USA, I'm very comfortable in Montevideo with the people, the food, and most of the customs. There are some great places to visit so, consider visiting here as a place to relax after the hustle-&-bustle of BA. While on your internship, consider taking the ferry across the rives to Montevideo and visiting the English Speaking Expat Sunday lunch. |
| "Uruguay has a lot to offer"
Montevideo is just 20 minutes away by plane from BA and it's definitely worth visiting. A two or three day visit should suffice, if what you want --on your first visit-- is to get a basic feel for the country and its people. In three days you can check out the main attractions in the capital, and maybe take a trip to Punta del Este and Piriapolis. If you come via Colonia del Sacramento, you can also take a few hours to vist the historic district of that beautifully preserved colonial-era town. |
| Thank you for the input Rodger and Dan. I think that gave Vernita some idea whether to go or not to Uruguay. For me, any country that has some beautiful places to visit is worth the trip, especially if I have friends in that particular place. |
