Health Insurance, USA vs Uruguay
| Health Insurance, USA vs Uruguay I'm sure there are some Americans out there reading this blog (whether current expats or potential future expats) who are following this health care reform thing in the US right now.The newest proposal seems to be to force every US citizen to buy health insurance (no doubt they will later further force people's hands with a limited choice of companies and policies that won't even fully cover them!). Of course there are people who wish they could afford health insurance, but there are also hundreds of thousands of people that don't need or want health insurance! They are healthy, fit, and when they need medical assistance they pay for it - that is that. How would you feel if, as an American expat here in Uruguay, with your own health coverage from Asociacion Espanola or Medica Uruguaya, you were forced to also pay for health insurance in the US that you will never use? It seems that there is a clause which exempts expats, but who knows what confusing little details are written in to its near 2000 pages! I found this blog post by an expat about the whole thing very interesting: |

A very good point... rather like US citizens being compelled to go on paying US taxes when they are no longer US residents. It seems to me particularly unfair especially as a major reason for the creation of the USA was unfair taxation. In my view it is self evident that taxes should be imposed on the grounds of residency rather than on the grounds of citizenship. |
| "taxes and expats"
Exactly! Seeing as the point of taxes is to pay for services that benefit residents - street cleaning, street lights, the police, health services, public services etc. Why should they have to pay for something that they don't even get to benefit from?!This new idea of paying for health insurance you can't even use is even more ridiculous though! |

Well you can always apply for citizenship in Uruguay and give up your citizenship in the States, if you do not want to pay taxes or health care. Citizenship is a privilege after all. We all want our rights, what about fulfilling our responsibilities. |
| "Importing propaganda from USA -"
If you sell your House in the States, You don't have to pay for Street cleaning, lights, Police, public services etc.The only Tax you will be paying is your Social Security and money taken from you 401K (you haven't paid taxes yet) if you have one. And you can sell your House and the equity (not as much now) is Tax free I also see that Republican propaganda has reached Uruguay. Just give the Democrats and Obama a chance it's only a year, after 8 years of the worst Administration in the history of the United States, that prompted the collapse of Banks and Institutions that were around for a 100 years, unemployment, largest debt in United States history. Without mentioning two Wars, Foreign relations etc. And don't forget that President Clinton gave Bush a Country without debt and with the best economy in history and no Wars. Clinton pushed me forward 5 years and Bush took me back 7 or more. Just a chance please. |
