Childbirth in Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentI am having a baby in February and will need a Caesarian section, my husband is already in Montevideo but I have the choice of moving now or staying in the USA until after the birth. I would really appreciate some first hand experiences of having a baby in Uruguay to help me make an informed decision.

Landlubber.

Thank author of this post/commentKlarita, thank you for your reply, I'm still trying to make up my mind and considering the advantages of continuing with my present OB or moving in the 3rd trimester and having to find a new one in Uruguay.

Thank author of this post/commentHi Landlubber...

I know 2 people who might be able to share some experiences with you, one is probably in labour as we speak she's due any day, and the other I think is a few months in and has decided to have the baby here as opposed to going back to the US.

Use "(contact member)" beside my name to let me know your email and I'll try get you guys in touch with each other.

Medical care is Uruguay is of a very high standard in most of the private institutions so you should have no problem finding the care you need.

Thank author of this post/commentI'm probably one of the 2 people Elaine is referencing. I'm due in February. I was planning to deliver at the British Hospital, but now I'm considering another facility. You can see the link below for some general information, but private message me if you want more detailed information.

Thank author of this post/comment"insurance"

hi i wonder from reading your blog did you have insurance before you got pregnant? we are 9 weeks into it and i have paid about 3500 twice for 2 consultancies and 600 for a scan.

can we go get insurance even though she is still pregnant?

also if we decide not too bother, what is the cost of the actuall birth - sorry first time father and no idea how it works let alone in uruguay?

Thank author of this post/comment"I just saw this"

Sorry I didn't check back in before. At the British Hospital, you cannot get insurance if you're pregnant. Well you can, but you have to pay a HUGE fee for a pre-existing condition.

At La Espanola, you can get insurance no matter how far along you are. If you're less than 3 months, the delivery is free. If you're more than 3 months, you have to pay a delivery fee, but it's minimal.

Thank author of this post/comment"consulting obtetrician at delivery"

As Chrystal says, on most "mutualistas" the delivery is free or costs only a small fee.

If you want the obstetrician you will consult during pregnancy to be present i the delivery, you need to pay them an extra fee (it was $300-400 when my daughter was born a while ago, $700 when my niece was born a couple years ago, but the fee might vary).

This fee usually means the doctor will give you their personal mobile phone number so you can contact them directly after sonogram tests, etc. This also varies depending on each doctor, but in my personal experience was well invested money, especially for first-time parents like us.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1281249117
