| 911 in Montevideo? I am living in Montevideo and have a-fib (a cardiac electrical problem) so it is not impossible I would need to go to an emergency room in an ambulance, or without an ambulance. I have medical insurance from the States. Who would I call and/or where should I go? Thanks in advance! (I live in Barrio Sur/Palermo.) |
| "Who to call.."
Well you could call 911 but i am not sure if they will be able to speak in english, so if you only speak english i would recomend you to ring the embassy and they will send you some help. But if you have health insurance here they will have some clinics associated, where you will able to ask for some help. You should call your health insurance and ask them what hospital you should go here in an emergency |

Find out all the details of who you need to call and where you need to go. There are various ambulance companies and they have memberships you can buy for $10 or $15 (dollars) a month. Then have a native Spanish speaker prepare for you a written paper with the details of what you need and where you need to go, and also a recording on a small tape recorder, spoken very slowly and clearly. That way if you have trouble communicating with someone on the phone or in person the pertinent details can be given to them. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "911 in Montevideo?"
So there is a 911 here that will answer (in Spanish) and send an ambulance or help if needed? (Thanks for the info and suggestions.) |
| " Uruguay use the 911 for emergency too"
Yes, it is been a while since the police introduced this num for any kind of emergencies. |
| "911 in Uruguay."
Beware, 911 in Uruguay is not meant for emergencies other than the ones related to the Police. Don't get mislead. They certainly will direct you to an emergency ambulance, or even send you one, but it's not their main duty and the times of response are not thought for the type of service 911 gives at the US. Your best solution is to join one of the private emergency services available (SEMM, Coronaria Móvil, SUAT, etc..). They have phone numbers to call for medical emergencies, specially for heart attacks, and will send you an equiped ambulance fast. However, I don't know they handle calls of non-Spanish speakers. You'll have to ask them in advance, or try to memorize a few key words in Spanish, in case you have to use them. |
