| humidity and mold allergies My husband and I are considering Uruguay for relocation next year. We visited last August and found the mold issue too much for my husband to take. We had to cut our trip short by a week! We hope to visit in another time of year, hoping that the humidity and mold issues are worse in the winter. Also, perhaps it is not so prevalent in newer construction. We love everything about Uruguay BUT, we simply cannot lie there if the humidity/mold problems make my husband sick! I'm not so interested in the air conditioning aspect as much as the mold aspect of humidity. Any thoughts?? |
| "allergies, mold, etc"
I've lived outside the USA for about 9 years and my allergies are much less of a problem... maybe because I am healthier for eating better. I've not had much problem with allergies in Uruguay (except at the malls where they seem to pump perfume into the fresh air....).The same with mold. Compared to say Costa Rica, where all closest doors are slatted and you have to regularly wipe mold off the surfaces anyway... As far as newer construction.. you'd need to take a closer look, but in general I've found the older construction to be higher quality and more comfortable (ie: larger room sizes, etc). The challenge for you will be to find a place that is suitable 12 months of the year... ie: if something is ok in February how will you know what it is like in August? Comment #211/21/11 12:40Rural east Colonia departmento | "Dampness and fungi"
Its a common problem in Uruguay... generally because the vast majority of the people view insulation as a wicked waste of money. When I first arrived here I lived in several rented houses old and new. All of them suffered from condensation problems and the various fungal growths commonly associated with them. In a former life I was a specialist surveyor who tackled such problems in the UK and Ireland. Generally speaking, the ROU's housing stock lacks half way decent insulation in roofs and walls which encourages damp problems. Mobile gas fires which release large amounts of water vapour into the air are popular here and combined with cold walls, these devices almost guarantee you condensation problems. Extractor fans in bathrooms and kitchens are also rare but in my experience, even if they are installed, most Uruguayos won't use them in order to "save money." I build my own dwelling here. I lavished money on European standards of insulation in roofs and walls, I installed insulative window roller shutters as a double glazing alternative, I heat the house using wood stoves (a dry heat source) and I have automatic humidity controlled extractor fans in each bathroom as well as in the kitchen and my office. I'm happy to report that we have seen no signs at all of condensation, mold or other damp problems. |
