Winter in Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentLet's all share our opinions and feeling about Winter in Uruguay.

I often hear people say that because it never gets to freezing, winter is Uruguay is quite mild.

Having spent most of my life in the Northern United States... Michigan, Illinois (near Chicago), Pennsylvania, I would tend to agree.

However, there is a big *IF* attached thinking winter in Uruguay is mild. And, that IF is what kind of heating your home or apartment has. I always took for granted that homes were well insulated and heated.

Making that assumption in Uruguay can leave you with winter being quite mild or winter being quite harsh depending on your luck. Common heating systems range from absolutely none (meaning you may well find winter quite harsh), or delightfully warmed floors and everything in between.

My advice is when looking for a place to live, pay close attention to the heating system.

Night frosts are not uncommon here in east Colonia but the sun usually burns them off by 10am. In my view the killer conditions are the "cold humidity" which can roll in off the river and on cloudy days it can persist.

I rely on a giant wood stove and a big freestanding steel fireplace but firewood is much cheaper down here than in MVD. I also find that the "split" air conditioners available here do a very cost efficient job when in heating mode.

Thank author of this post/comment"it is cold!"

The big problem in Uruguay is that most of the houses here do not have heating.

And to have access to heating is expensive.

For that reason, although the cold in the winter here does not reach low temperatures, as in other parts of the world, many can say that the winters are very cold here. Still not ready technologically and financially to change heating systems, both in our homes and in public places.

The malls have heating and some restaurants are starting to get heating systems, like everything in Uruguay, this will be a slow change, but at least we're changing!

I'm am in Uruguay in July and August, the coldest months of the year, and I love it!!! Most days are "perfect", at least for me (Fall and Winter happen to be my favorite seasons), usually crisp but sunny, a bit damp and windy some days, but not to the extreme, and wonderful to go to a flea market ("feria") or take a long walk in the city, checking out the sites, taking breaks for a hot latte ("cortado") at one of the many cozy street cafes, stopping by at a museum for a special exhibit, or a church to simple listen to the silence.

Australia living in La Paloma
Thank author of this post/comment"Freezing for this Aussie - but I love it"

Coming from the north eastern part of Australia, I find the winter here really cold (we live on the beach though, so the wind makes it colder at home than the rest of the town). But, I love the open fire place, and the nature during winter.

Here in La Paloma, we get to enjoy the whales up close throughout winter, which is really magical. I couldn't believe it last year when I saw how close they are to the shore. Plus, it is not uncommon to see seals (and baby seals sunning themselves on the beach), dolphins (which we are actually seeing heaps at the moment) and turtles. A lot of the winter days are really crisp and sunny. So although it is cold, it is really beautiful.

So, rather than complaining about the cold and the wind, we rug up, get outside and enjoy what's around, and then when we get home, enjoy the comfort of the fire!

Wow, Tamara with that description you would win anyone over! Rocha is an incredible place for wildlife - nandu, condors, sea turtles, whales, its just a fantastic place.

I've never been one of those people that loves summer and hates winter. Summer brings hot days, and the freedom to wear whatever you want (which for an Irish girl is a freedom I rarely enjoy back home seeing as it can potentially rain at any moment!). The spring and autumn see bright blue skies and either beautiful blooming flowers or crunchy falling amber leaves...but beware, there is a BITING wind on the Uruguayan coast - even when it looks lovely through a window it can in fact be very cold.

I find winter tough here because of 2 reasons. The first Klarita has already mentioned. Winter is harder on your body, but its nice to at least come home to a warm (dry!) apartment and put your feet up. In Uruguay most buildings don't have built-in heating so you have to use stand alone gas heaters (which spew out water vapor and make it damp) or electric plug-in heaters which suck electricity like you wouldn't believe!

The 2nd reason is very personal to me. As I am from the northern hemisphere my year is back-to-front here. Certain things make the dark rainy days of winter worthwhile when I'm in Ireland...I love Halloween, I celebrate my birthday in November, and then of course there is Christmas, which is Ireland really starts in late November and the lead up is very festive and family oriented. Winter in Uruguay however is mostly just cold weather with few events to pick me up along the way. But like I said, that's a personal reason coming from being a northern hemisphere baby.

I get around the problem by celebrating anti-Christmas on June 25th :-)
