No gringos in Uruguay
No gringos in UruguayI learned today that there aren't any gringos in Uruguay. Here they call us Yankees!
Interesting. So instead of being called gringos, we're called Yankees. I guess that's less offensive. I supposed we're all Yankees to them.
I've never found anyone that used the term "Gringo" in Latin America to indent an insult. One of the newspapers here had a big Engligh headline "Yankees Go Home".... though I believe they were referring to President George W Bush and not the various Americans living and visiting here. Bush's visit is obnoxious as they closed the Rambla (blvd along the beach and around the city for many hours yesterday awaiting his arrival) and today the noise of heliocopters ruins the usually peaceful Saturday morning.
I read in my newspaper today about the yankees, but it was spelled yanqui. Is that more accurate for how the Uruguayans refer to us? Here gringo is used offensively. I'm sure Uruguayans don't mean it thusly.
Also the letters Y and LL are prounced with a SH sound in Uruguay, so Yankee is actually pronounced as "shanky". I have no idea how they normally spell it.
Well if we Yankee's come to their country and spend our US dollars there, what is the problem? I think all country's don't mind tourist, but if we try to change their culture, then I suppose they could get defensive.
Well... I believe it is not the tourists they question... but if Bush brings them "money" what "strings" are attached...The problem with tourist money is when it develops an economy that is based on over charging tourists.
So if they don't call American's Gringo's and call them Yankees then what do they call Canadians?I thought the term Gringo meant foreigner and that it was used for anyone not from their country. Am I wrong in presuming that? Do they have separate words for Canadians, Germans, British, Asians, etc.? Curious minds would like to know.
That is an interesting question. I am curious about the answer. Here referring to someone from another country as anything other than their nationality is considered racist.
Yes I agree. It would be in extremely poor taste to call a Canadian a Yankee because we are not know as yankees anywhere in the world. Now if they called us Canucks I can live with that but anything else would definitely be a slur on our country.
Why not call people from the US Americans and people from Canada Canadians?
I believe it is for convenience Seth, You see "American(s)" has four syllable a-me-ri-can unlike "gringos" which only has two grin-gos. It can be offensive or it can be just part of their tradition to call foreigners either gringos and yankees, we shouldn't be really affected by it, not unless we are being cursed and bad mouthed plus the word Gringo... then that draws the line. It is like you making a criticism to some one (of either what he/she is wearing and doing without knowing it) so keep an open mind about this kinds of things.
