Moving to Uruguay next year

Thank author of this post/commentMy husband and I plan to retire in Uruguay next year. I'll be visiting sometime in the spring of 2010. Currently, I am trying to learn more about the possibilities of opening a private psychology practice in Montevideo limited to serving the expat community. Does anyone have information on licensure? Probably the psychology dept. at the University would be able to give me this information, so it would help if I could get some contact info before coming down. I'm very excited about our move and look forward to meeting people and hearing more. Susan

Thank author of this post/comment"Expat-focused business"

Hi Susan,

Just out of curiosity, why have you chosen Uruguay? Is it necessary for you to continue working or is it just something you would like to continue doing?

Uruguay is a very small country, as such the market is even smaller. In relation, the expat community is absolutely tiny, and if limited to only those that speak English fluently then you don't have a big pool of potential customers to draw from.

The expat community here is quite close knit and rather active, so it can appear quite big. However if you were to actually count the number of expats you would find there aren't very many (and there are many here for short-term periods). Then you must take in to consideration that the service you are offering is very specific and most people don't need a psychologist on a regular basis.

Not only that, but setting up a business in Uruguay isn't the easiest of tasks. There are many documents, processes, fees and you are required pay for the services of translators, lawyers, escribanos (notary public) and the like.

I don't mean to sound discouraging, I'm just saying it may be a challenging business environment. Have you thought about provided distance services for customers in the US. Or continuing with academic work? Your resume looks very impressive but unfortunately without Spanish you won't make the best use of your skills here.

La Universidad de la Republica is the leading university in Uruguay (there are other private colleges). Here is the website for their Faculty of Psychology (only available in Spanish I'm afraid):

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 670869791
