| Montevideo carnival schedule 2009 Is it too late for a quick trip to Montevideo to see the Carinval and maybe some real estate? |
| Wow, carnaval in Montevideo is steaming hot taht lasts for 55 days. Imagine, street dancing for 55 days straight, that is certainly a big party or a fiesta indeed! Here is a brief introduction on Carnaval week: Carnival Week is considered the annual national festival of the nation. While the Carnaval extends to all the country with important events in several cities of the interior, the main activities are made in the capital of Montevideo. Although this ‘fiesta’ is officially only given two days of public holiday for the Carnaval Monday and Shrove Tuesday preceding Ash Wednesday, most shops and businesses close for the entire week. Homes and streets are grandly decorated, humorous shows are staged at open-air theaters, "tablados" or popular scenes (fixed and movable) are erected in the commercial districts. There are many competitions for murgas, black societies and lubolos, humorists, parodistas and magazines |
| Hi Yippy, where did you read all this information about Carnaval? its a strange time of year to be talking about it... Carnaval in Uruguay takes place in February (late Summer is the perfect time for outdoor events!). Its not really 55 days of dancing in the streets, thats a bit of an overexaggeration. Uruguay claims to have "the longest carnaval celebration in the world", but the truth is there are only a few really big events and the rest of the month is filled with Murga every single night! The best and biggest events are the inaugural parade which goes all the way along 18 de Julio and is really impressive. The Llamadas parade is also fantastic, all the candombe comparsas march the streets of Barrio Sur and Palermo and put on an amazing show! There's also some great events in smaller coastal towns like Punta del Diablo and La Pedrera (although if you go to La Pedrera for carnaval prepare for water fights, everyone throws water balloons!)
