Just moved to MVD Uruguay!

Thank author of this post/commenthello everyone!

My name is Paola and I am 30 yrs old. I just recently moved to Uruguay from NYC and I am finding it hard to adjust so far. I am originally from Argentina but I have lived in NYC most of my life and needed a change so i decided to try Uruguay. Argentina would've been an easier adjustment only because Buenos Aires is fast pace like NYC but I thought I would try Uruguay for a year and then see where Life takes me.

I wanted to find out how everyone adjusted to living here?

Some of things I like are: The people are wonderful! super nice and polite. The food is GREAt so I spend a lot of time eating but have lost 20 lbs eating 3 times what I ate in NYC! The architecture is beautiful.

The things I dislike: like in Argentina seeing all the street dogs break my heart, the graffitti ruining the pretty houses and buildings, EVERYTHING is super expensive. I have an iphone that i guess i wont be connecting because movistars plan start at 860 pesos and thats beyond annoying. I've also been applying for work (administravie/executive asst positions for bilingual or international companies) for the past 2 months and not even ONE person has gotten back to me. Its very discouraging to say the least and so I dont know if Ill end up staying here since with no work there is no money.

I do have half of my family here but without friends adjusting is becoming more difficult so I thought I'd post here and see what your experiences have been like. I feel like I took a time machine into the past and not sure how to proceed or what to do next.

thanks for reading!

:)

Friends... a good way to start is stopping by the meetings on Sunday and/or Thursday (see the links at the top of each page here). And, since you are fluent in Spanish locals should be easier to meet... though sometimes I think maybe the opposite is true...

There is plenty of free wifi around... so maybe you can find a convenient place to check in on....

Jobs, that is an area where unfortunately no one can offer too much hope. But, it's probably still "vacation" time... so things might bit up during the next few weeks.

Hi Glen!

thanx for your reply! I wasnt sure if the site was still alive and kicking since I saw some msgs were old.

Are the meetings still going on? I'd love to stop by one day and meet everyone. at least I can learn from others experiences!

Do you have a resident visa (do you need one, are you a citizen of Argentina or USA - or both)?

For the iPhone, I think you can get a prepaid account/chip for it. Not sure which company, though.

Prices: I find fruits and vegetables quite reasonable. Restaurants a bit higher than where we came from (Hawaii) but not bad. Electronics? Much higher!

The Sunday meetings have happened *every* Sunday since they were started in Nov 2005... as well the Thursday Happy Hour/Dinner since it started last year.

The page header shows the date for the upcoming meetings:

• Sunday Expat Lunch: Noon, Jan 22, 2012, Fellini's Montevideo

• Thursday Expat Dinner: 8pm, Jan 26, 2012, Parrillada La Estada (Pocitos)

The locations rarely changes, but its not a bad idea to check the website just in case.

All the messages here are dated... and go back to May of 2005 when the site was started. Some have useful information and others add perspective on how things have changed in that time.

Hi Jerry, I am an Uruguayan citizen through my father.

Thank author of this post/comment"iPhone"

There was a guy who attended a few of the ex-pat Sunday lunches (July, August?) who had an iPhone and used a prepaid chip. Sorry, I don't remember his name (I think he was from New Zealand and involved in energy generation projects) but when you go to the lunch, ask around, someone may remember something. He may even be there.

Another thought, though: which iPhone do you have? Maybe the ability to use a prepaid sim is limited to certain models (newer vs. older).

And yes, the fruits and veggies do taste great!

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1028344233
