For those who are using local buses in Montevideo
| For those who are using local buses in Montevideo From the 19th april, you will be able to buy the one hour ticket , just if you have the card of the STM( sistema de transporte metropolitano), If you have not the card , you wont be able to get that ticket. You can get this card in the STM stores, it is free the first time if you lose it, the second one will cost $50 uruguayan pesos . The one hour ticket, allow you to take more than one bus during one hour and 20 min. |
| "STM Card"
Can you load money on an STM Card to use to pay your fare?Without an STM Card you can still pay the fare and take the bus somewhere... you just can't get off and then back in within 1 or 2 hours without paying again? What stores can you get the STM card in? Is the card personally identifiable to you, ie: can/does the bus system track your movements? |
| "The new bus tickets"
Although the prices are subject to changes, and some special routes cost more than others, here is the general overview of the bus tickets.Anyone can buy: - a normal ticket called "comun" which currently costs 17 pesos, this allows you to ride the full length of one bus route - a short hop ticket called "centrico", this is only allowed within the downtown area and can be bought for journeys between Ciudad Vieja up to Eduardo Acevedo street. - you also used to be able to buy a 1 hour ticket for the same price as the comun, this would allow you to change buses once and use the same ticket (though you had to use the same bus company). As Klarita said, this has now been changed so you have to have the STM card to buy this ticket. With the STM card you can also buy a 2 hour ticket. This currently costs 22.50 pesos and allows you to take as many buses as you like, from almost any company (ordinary routes only, no long distance ones) within a 2 hour time frame. The card has a chip in it that you swipe when you buy the original ticket. Then you have to swipe the card on every additional bus you get on. To get the card you must present your cedula so yes, your card is associated with you. You can get your card at the Intendencia (go in the back door, not the door facing Ejido) or there are many other locations listed here: |
| "Some limitations?"
Klarita, I think there are some limitations for the 1-hour (now 80-minute) ticket. I've heard it is thought for combining buses of diferent lines and not for the same line. For example, if you have to go somewhere and then return, using the same line number, you are not allowed to use the 1-hour ticket, but have to buy two tickets. I'm not sure if there are other limitations. żDo you have more information about this? |
| "Changes to bus ticket rules"
Here's a link to the article in El Pais about the changes (article is in Spanish). As Alberto said, the 1-hour ticket will be increased to 80 minutes but can now only be bought if you present the STM magnetic card. The other change is that with this ticket you can now switch to any bus from any company. CUTSCA runs the majority of the lines, but there are also the green, yellow and red buses from other companies which will now be included for use with this ticket. Apparently 600, 000 of these STM cards have already been issued (I wonder if that includes doubles..I believe many people have misplaced them and had to get replacements). |
| "the card is needed for the ticket "1hour""
Since 2 May, will be required to use the card "STM" to access to the trip "one hour" in public transport, Montevideo |
| "hypothetical"
I do have one of these STM magnetic cards but I haven't used it yet... I'd like to give it a try...So let's see if I understand this right: if I needed to take a bus from Pocitos to Ciudad Vieja returning to Pocitos 1-2 hours later, I could buy a 2-hour ticket at $22.50 and use any bus company going and returning, right? But If I were to stay 3+ hours before returning then I'd have to buy a normal/"comun" ticket each way, at a cost of $34, right? It's bit confusing...(for me). |
| "Response to hypothetical "So let's see if I understand this right""
From one Dan to another, your conclusions are correct. I have done it before. The confusing part was when to put my STM card up against the card-reader. On CUTSCA the card-reader is usually the bright yellow plastic box about chest high where you pay. On other lines the card-reader is smaller and less obvious. Ask for a 2 hour ticket. Pay your money and hold your STM card (doesn't seem to matter which side) up against the card-reader. Any bus (any, as in whichever bus Company) you get on for the next two hours you simply press your card against the card-reader rather than pay money. CLARIFICATION REQUIRED: I was under the impression you could only use it one time, but it sounds from other comments as though you may use it as many times as necessary during the two hours. If you get further clarification on this, please let me know, too. |

Yes Dan(from Norwalk) you are right |
| "thanks"
Thank you Dan and Ana! I'll have to give it a try when I'm in Uruguay this July and August. |
| "MORE CHANGES"
Hi if you are in Montevideo and use the local busses, pay attention! From Monday 6 you can also pay with the STM card, the tickets called: central, zonal, differential and utgoing Metropolitan( metropolitano saliente). |
| "Which ticket?"
central, zonal, differential and outgoing Metropolitan( metropolitano saliente). How do you know what ticket to buy? is the basic fare still 17 pesos? Is there a cheaper ticket saying going from Montevideo Shopping to Punta Carettas than from one of those to Centro? Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "metropolitano and centrico"
The comun ticket still at $17 but there are other options for people that needs to combine busses around the metropolitan area, for exemple i live on route 7, 30 kms away from Montevideo(i only have the interdepartamentales busses in my area), so i will ask for metropolitan ticket i will pay on that bus and i will get off of that bus and i will take a local one on 8 de octubre st, to go anywhere in Montevideo. When i get on the second bus only will show the ticket of the first bus and i dont have to pay again. So i will save around 8 pesos each time i have to do that buses connection. So now it seems i will be able to use the STM card every time that im returning home but i cant get it with the card when i am comming to Mvdo, because the interdepartamentales buses doesn't have the machine to use the card, , , , so complicated!! lolThe Centrico ticket it is used only in the down town, for exemple you are doing shopping on 18 de Julio st and you dont feel like walking you can take a bus for $10 pesos. Ej; to go from 18 de julio st and ejido st to ciudadela st, you just have to ask Boleto Centrico. I will add a map with the zone where you can use this ticket. there are others kind of tickets, what i recomend it is to ask the Bus driver or the "Guarda" wich ticket would be the best for your trip. |
