Driving in Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentI know that in some countries the driving is worser than the states. Do you think driving in Uruguay is a good idea? Is it a good idea to rent a car? I will appreciate any help.

Thank author of this post/commentI have a friend that has been to Uruguay several times. He has rented a car each time because there's no that much public transportation. I think that if you plan on visiting more than one place then renting a car is a good idea.

Thank author of this post/commentI know some people have went to Montevideo and got a driver for the day. I think it cost around 100 dollars a day. If you are very comfortable with the area then you can rent a car. I hear this rental service has the best rates.

Thank author of this post/commentThis will be my first trip to Uruguay and I think renting a car might be a good idea. I will be bringing the kids so I probably can handle them better if I rent a car. I'm going to look into rental companies and any other transportation.

Yeah, I would also suggest renting a car if you are to go to Uruguay.

What are you planning to do? Where are you planning to go?

I would recommend NOT renting a car for the time you will spend in Montevideo.

Thank author of this post/comment"public transportation in Uruguay"

There is plenty of public transportation in Uruguay. I admit I am not an expert on this subject but I know for a fact that Montevideo has plenty of bus lines that cover the entire metropolitan area 24/7. The buses are relatively new and comfortable and the bus fare is very reasonable compared to other cities elsewhere. There is also a rather significant fleet of taxi cabs and car service companies. The yellow cabs are rather small and uncomfortable, especially if you are tall and big, as I am. But they can take you from A to B and the fares are also reasonable, comparatively speaking. In addition, there are several bus companies that go to cities in the countryside, also at all times of the day, every day of the week. I agree with Lee in recommending against renting a car on your first visit to Uruguay.

Thank author of this post/comment"Renting for driving outside of MVD?"

We'll be in Montevideo on Friday and are planning to taxi or bus from airport to Pocitos for the first few days then rent a car for the time out in Piriapolis/Punta del Este. At least that was our plan.

Is it a good idea to taxi from the airport to Pocitos or is the bus the way to go? I heard there is a direct bus that goes to Pocitos with only a few stops for about 26 pesos (US$1.35?) Taxi is about US$15-25? We will have a few bags.

We are getting prices on rentals at the airport that are about $440-480. Is it necessary to get their LDW (loss damage waiver) for $31 per day? Once outside of MVD we thought driving would alright. We are used to East coast driving from Philadelphia to Boston.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

Joseph, this may be rather subjective, but I always prefer to drive except in cities with a extremely dense traffic, what Montevideo is not. It may take a while to get used to driving in MDV, but if you take it easy and drive at your speed, you'll be fine. I'd just rent it in the airport. You don't really need it too much at the city, but if you have it you can drive around Friday night or Saturday. Using a car will give you an authonomy that buses and taxis won't match. Take into account however that in some places in Pocitos sometimes it's difficult to find place in the streets to park. But if you are going to a Hotel, probably they have private parking. I sugest you to take the full insurance for the car. If you don't know Montevideo yet, I sugest you to postpone your trip to Piriápolis/Punta del Este so you can go to have lunch at the Mercado del Puerto on Saturday noon (well, really from 1:00 pm on would be a more propper time). It's worth to know it, and Saturday is the day. If you are planning to stay in a hotel in the Pir or PDE, you can go after lunch. Otherwise, you could do it Sunday. The ride to PDE is very easy and it would be less than 2 hours at legal speeds. Enjoy.

Thanks for the tip Alberto! We are planning to stay in MVD until Monday morning, so I think a visit to the Mercado Saturday is a perfect plan.

If it all works out we"ll be at Bar Atlantico on Friday night for the MVD Language Exchange gathering and then Sunday the Expat Lunch at Fellini Ristobaretto.

Not nearly enough time... our list keeps getting longer.

I have driven once in the past 7-1/2 years... from Montevideo to Salto and back. Out of the city driving is easy.

I would NOT rent a car for any time spent in Montevideo. Taxi's are just too easy to bother with the hassles of a car (any issues of traffic aside).

Depending on what you do outside Montevideo would suggest your need for a car or not. Someone was planning to look at farms... now for that I WOULD recommend a rental car.

If I were to go to Salto again, I think I'd take the bus there and taxis around once I got there. Less stress and unless I did a LOT of taxing, much less money.

Thank author of this post/comment"Saturday and Sunday mornings."

If you are staying in MVD for the weekend do the following:

Before going to the Mercado del Puerto, take a walk from Plaza Independencia through Sarandí Street into Ciudad Vieja. The Mercado is a few blocks from there.

On Sunday morning, Before the exptats' lunch, go to the Feria de Tristán Narvaja. You'll find the antiques stores I mentioned when you asked about stained glass.

Hey Joseph,

Welcome on board! I've been living in Uruguay for a year and a half, mostly in Montevideo but I have also lived up the coast in Punta del Diablo. I don't have a car but I recently rented one for a few weeks as my parents came to visit.

I would agree that a car in Montevideo is nice luxury but only if you're really familiar with the streets and know exactly where you're going. As has been said many times, the buses are great and the taxis are relatively cheap and plentiful...not to mention they know where they're going! Most of the street in downtown Montevideo are one-way, which can make driving more tricky. Also, the junctions are quite difficult given that thee roads are of equal size so nobody really has right of way but many aren't controlled by traffic lights. My father is an ex-rally driver and has rented cars in countries all over the world and he didn't want to drive in Montevideo because of those junctions, they really can be lethal.

As for outside Montevideo, yes the bus services are great - well priced, comfortable and plentiful. However once you get to your destination the public transport isn't great and at this time of year when there can be sudden rain showers it is nice to have a car for pottering around and exploring the area. I would definitely encourage you to take out full coverage insurance ("seguro total"), its worth the small extra cost but be aware that not all companies offer it. I rented from Budget and found them to be great. They let me rent from the airport and leave it back in the Punta Carretas branch for no extra cost.

If you're doing that drive Montevideo - Punta del Este I would really suggest checking out the place in this blog post below....its a bit of an adventure to find, but a lovely little spot.

Good Luck!

Most cars available for rent in Uruguay are "stick shifts" (standard transmission). Very few are automatic. If you want to rent an automatic you pay through the roof. Last year, I inquired with a friendly rental agent and the cost was U$100+ a day, not including taxes and insurance. Plus, the models available were old gas guzzlers. On the contrary, if you want to rent a car with standard transmission, the cost is significantly less (U$25 30 per day) and the models available are mostly new or relatively new.

Thats's an important point Dan, I forget that people from the US are used to driving automatic cars.

I'm very intrigued by this price of US$25 a day, that's a very good price, where did you get quoted that?

Hi Elaine, My sister who lives in Parque de Miramar, Canelones (not too far from the airport) rented it (and drove it for me) from a rental dealer who operates right at the entrance of Parque de Miramar, which is off of Avenida de las Americas (I believe that is the correct name of the road that leads to Carrasco Airport). I don't recall the name of the rental agency. Sorry.

Hey all,

Thanks for the help. I think we are going to take a bit of all the advice. Skip the car in MVD but, rent one out in Piriapolis so we can get around and look at property. We will have a realtor to drive us but, we want to explore also and I am guessing we'll be going into Punta del Este a lot of evenings to eat.

Our friend Fred is in Atlantida now so we'll see about joining him at Posada Biarritz if we can fit it in.

Thanks to everyone for your help. We are so excited about the trip! Hope to meet some of you while we are there, put some names with the faces.

Hasta luego,

Joseph
