American banks in Uruguay I noticed that a bunch of people were searching for "American banks in Uruguay". At first glance this would seem to be a sensible desire. Find a bank in Uruguay that is connected up with your bank, "back home".First off, I should mention that Citibank has branches in Uruguay and Bank Boston did before they were sold to Banco Itau (Brazil). Below I have linked to the Total Uruguay Expat eBook section with a list of banks in Uruguay. Unfortunately, there are a few issues American banks or banks owned by American Banks: Most importantly, if you have an account at Citibank in the USA, the branch in Uruguay is no easier to deal with than if you didn't. You can't access your funds in your USA Citibank account from the Uruguay office (someone correct me if I am mistaken here). In general, you'll probably find: - Opening balances and paperwork requirements high - Refusal to open accounts for US Citizens who are non-residents: - Bank Boston specifically told me they would not open an account until I was a legal resident. By that time I had no interest. - Citibank, although they telemarket me for credit cards, has thus far failed to provide any specific information on account requirements, fees, etc that was promised me for Total Uruguay - Opening an account at BROU, is the simplest, and lowest opening balance (US$500 to avoid a monthly service charge).
