Domestic help

Thank author of this post/commentI am moving to MVD next year and am interested in the rates for domestic help. The home I seek will have service quarters. I would like to hire a live-in housekeeper/cook, who would also stay at the house and tend to my pets when I am traveling. What is customary for days off, vacations, social security (or the like)

Thank author of this post/commentHi Bill,

the usual days off are Thursdays afternoon and Sundays. But to new regulations the domestic help living in the house is only responsible for 8 hours work. If she works longer you will have to pay overtime.

My recommendation: engage a person for eight hours a day; check her out if she is honest and responsible; pay her a reasonable good hourly rate and speak with her, if she can stay in the house while you are travelling.

This is much better solution, than having a stranger living in your house.

Thank author of this post/commentI've see website articles that suggest you can have a live in maid in Uruguay for something like US$100/month.

I've never had any interest in a live in maid... but have one that comes 3 days a week for 4 hours. This is how the pay works out:

50 pesos/hr + 20 pesos for the bus = 220 pesos/day

That's 660 pesos a week, or 2, 640 pesos a month. The BPS (social security/health care) runs 1, 360 pesos a month.

In US dollars that comes to $125 for her pay, $65 for BPS or US$180 per month.

The BPS is really easy to sign up for but you have to do it on the first day the person works for you or pay a penalty. You tell them the monthly wages and then get a bill every month. If the wages change then you have to go back and change things with BPS.

Also if you don't pay the bill on time then you can't pay it and have to go to the BPS office or wait for the next month.

Out maid is also happy to take care of things while we are away... ie: feed the cats, etc.

Thank author of this post/commentThanx for the tips on maid service - they were very helpful. Sorry I'm so slow in responding - My voting residence is some distance from where I'm presently working and I had to take a trip to cast my vote. We have early voting here in North Carolina that begins on October 16.

I'm confused with Mr. Lee. You've said that a live in maid cost $100 a month, then why are you paying 80 dollars more for your 3x a week with 4hours of work?

Thank author of this post/commentI said nothing of the nature... I said: "I've see website articles that suggest you can have a live in maid in Uruguay for something like US$100/month."

(I typoed the word see... should have been "seen")... I was expressing doubt that you can really get a live in maid for $100/month.

There are some websites that seem to promote Uruguay as the ultimate CHEAP place to live. I disagree with them.

I think both Asia and Central American can be much cheaper places to live. I'm not sure the quality of life is as high though. Each has its advantages and disadvantages.

I think those that promote Uruguay simply as a "cheap" place to live are doing their readers a disservice. There are plenty of good reasons to live in Uruguay... and it may be cheaper than living in the USA.

Also the January 2009 BPS bill just came and its 1693 pesos.. up from 1360 in October 2007.

Even before I read his reply, I had noted that when Lee talked of 100 bucks, he was not voicing his personal opinion. Naid, perhaps then you need to pay more attention to detail. I think the best kind of maid-service is the part time one because it gives her time to herself and she is able to work at her own pace. The best ones though come out of how you relate witt them
