Is this normal?
| Is this normal? I've been touch with an English school in Montevideo, and since I'm not familiar with the way people do business there, I wanted to ask if this school's behavior is normal. I've emailed the school 3-4 times, and they have replied every time, but they have been very slow in giving me information. For example, here in Taiwan I would know everything I needed to know within 1-2 emails. By "everything" I mean salary, working hours or number of classes I could expect, and any other contractual obligations. However, the school I've been talking to in Montevideo still hasn't told me whether or not they could give me enough classes to support myself. I'm wondering if that's because they themselves don't actually know, or if this is normal in Uruguay? |
| "Using Email"
I find using email or the web to be unproductive in most cases. There are a few notable exceptions.Getting prices from buscando casa, and tienda inglesa (their online ordering can be nice or an expercise in frustration, though they have made some things better.... it used to be you had to enter your credit card number in 4 boxes of 4 numbers each, but it would only display 2 numbers in each box of 4, you also had to enter your phone number 3 times. The credit card number thing has been corrected)... Ordering gas (propane tank) online work great once, but not after they. They told me I had to call. With email, I find it is generally useful only after a preestablished relationship with someone. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Email Responses"
They probably don't know the answers to "how many classes" or "how many hours" since that depends on how many students sign up and they won't know until the students do sign up. |

Most things here are best done face to face or by phone.Patrick. |
| "ok, thanks!"
Ok, thanks again, guys. I was hoping that I could have a full time position all lined up before moving to Montevideo. That's what I've always done here in Asian. Looks like that isn't going to happen though, which means saving up a lot more money before going. |
| "Phone calls"
I avoid phone calls.. especially when language will be an issue. In general I avoid for the phone for anything... business... social activities...For business... email or that's it. Locally, I go somewhere. For social activities... text messages to arrange a time and place to meet. Social and phones/internet/etc don't mix. Social is face to face. If language is an issue, take along paper, pen, and possible some photos of what are you looking for. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
| "Who replied?"
I ask because even the US Embassy here uses mal bots to give generic and non-specific replies to questions. For example I tried to register myself with them, following the suggestion of the person I had spoken to at The Embassy itself. Their registration form refused to take my phone info. So I snet them an email which received an immediate response, redirecting me to the same non-functioning form. So, vague response, think bot.You also might try resending your messages next week. We here in the ROU have been dep into summer vacations, especially schools of any variety. Today, for instance, is the first actual workday this week, Monday and Tuesday having been the Carnaval holidays. Expert Page: Enjoy life a bit at Feligreta |
