Broadly speaking, salaries are low in the ROU compared with most other countries. Because we are a Welfare State, the cost of employing someone is approximately 1.8 times the employee's salary after paying the BPS contributions, the 13th month, holidays, sickness benefits, training days etc. |
| "13th Month"
Costa Rica has the same 13th month, but it is all paid in December, not split between June and December. I think the vacation pay in Uruguay is much greater and really brings total salary closer to 15 months.Comparing to the United States, the "social security" (BPS) contribution seems quite high, especially for lower salaries, or part time workers. However, the worker receives medical coverage so the money is not being used for some abstract or future benefit. For example, I pay my maid approximately 3, 000 pesos a month (NOT full time). I pay BPS about 1, 570 pesos a month. However, that is based on a base salary not the actual pay. As I understand it if my maid worked less, the BPS payment would still be the same. But, she gets full medical, so its not a bad deal. The BPS system for domestic employees is really easy. You sign up, they send you a bill every month. That's it for the paperwork. | If you are going to work in Uruguay companies or establishment, the salary would usually depend on the kinds of work you are in. As far as I know if you are a registered worker in Uruguay you can even earn 10, 810 Uruguayan pesos per month. If you work in the bank, you will get higher salary and compensation. So I think you have to think well whether to work in Uruguay or Costa Rica. |
| Hi there guys. I am interested in finding out more about the jobs that I can apply for in Uruguay. I have been thinking of moving and working in there and so if you can share here any good links to where I can read and learn more about my concern then that would be a lot of help. Thanks a lot and have a great day ahead to all of you. |
| "minimum monthly salary vs. canasta familiar"
It'd be interesting to know how many "typical families" actually live on a minimum monthly salary (is it UY$ 7, 000 now?)rather than the minimum "canasta familiar" (UY$ 30, 000+) that the government establishes as the ideal minimum to meet basic needs. To be more precise, my question has to do with percentages: I wonder what percentage of the working population, earning the minimum monthly salary established by the government, support their families on a minimum monthly income alone, vis'a'vis the rest of the employed population. Honestly, I have no clue, but if I had to guess, I'd say "few" or none (please correct me if I'm wrong!), since I cannot imagine a family of four (4) could survive on a monthly income of UY$ 7, 000 alone, given the current cost of living. I do know that in Uruguay both husband and wife hold jobs, and sometimes more than one job per person. |
