| WWOOF Hello All, My name is Geoffrey. I am 39. My long time girlfriend is Becks, short for Rebecca. She is 35. We have been looking for a place to settle ever since we left Utila, Honduras 18 months ago. I am a chef and had a restaurant on the island. Becks was a PADI divemaster. We have been looking for land in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. We have not found what we are looking for, yet. We would like a small bit of land. Just a hectare or so for a smallholding. I am very interested in old food preservation practices. Salting, drying, pickling, canning. You get the idea. We would like to grow the veg and raise the animals, pigs for ham and such and goats for milk to make cheese. I am particularly interested in making air dried hams, and sausages such as chorizo and salami. Becks would like to keep bees and make rustic furniture. To this end we will be coming to Uruguay in April. We are hoping to WWOOF as a way to see the country, meet people doing things similar to what we would like to do and look for land. If anyone has any advice for us we would be glad for it. If anyone has WWOOFed or has a farm or dairy, makes cheese or any of the things I mentioned and would like some help let us know. | "Atlantida"
Hi Geoff and Becks.I have 4.5 hectares near Atlantida (about 45 mins outside of Montevideo along the coast towards Punta del este). We are organic, but as the farm is so early in development we're not really producing much as yet. I'm English, my wife is Parguayan, we have a 12yr old son. I have neighbouring farmers who make cheese and others who make their own sausage, I can of course introduce you guys to them, then we'll have to charm them into showing you how they do their stuff :) We've planted 100 citrus trees, have a small huerta (planting broad beans and peas now for the upcoming winter), 4 cows, 20 chickens, 2 ducks (currently broody with 14 eggs) and 3 dogs :D we also have 5 bee hives on the farm, but I dont manage them. Once a month the owners of the hives come and check on them....they'd be happy to bring an extra suit or 2 and show you the ropes I am sure. Over the next month we'll be planting around 150 more citrus and I'm currently clearing (little by little) the chirca from my remaining 3 hectares of campo sucio using a gradening fork! There's quite a lot of land for sale in the area, but very little under 4 hectares. I know of one neighbour who wishes to sell about 1 hectare. feel free to contact me if you'd like to visit or if I can help with any advice etc. Andy |
