Thinking of Moving to Uruguay - trip this summer

Thank author of this post/commentHello Group! This is my first posting. We are a couple planning to move to Uruguay later this year. We are a young 60 and are originally form the U.S. (California, Florida and New York). I am reading some of the earlier posts regarding life in country, cost of living, technology, etc. I have several questions if some of you would be so kind to reply:

1. What is the real estate situation like now? We believe we should rent for a year before buying. We would like to like somewhere like Piriapolis or Atlantida or in the El Pinar to Solymar area but of course we must check it out first. we have seen prices on the real estate site for rentals that say - $20, 000 and expenses $1, 000. What are the expenses referring to? Estimated costs of utilities or what?

2. Where, besides the city, are the expats locating? Punta del Este is too seasonal and tourist oriented for us.

3. For internet: is there any cable available? I have read there is only ADSL. What is the top end megabyte download speed? We have MACs - I notice there are MAC dealers there and wireless seems to be available. Would it be worth it to bring iPhones?

Thanks for your help - we are really excited at the prospects of moving and meeting everyone.

Rey Koch

P.S. Any recent experience in bringing in a container? We are hiring a lawyer to do everything but we must find a good CUSTOMS BROKER. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the board.

I'm a rural lifeform so I can't be of much help re your questions about MVD and the coast but two years ago I was landed in customs trouble by an unexpected change in the law and needed an expert customs broker/shipping agent to help get me out of the resulting mess.

The lady who saved me a great deal of trouble is Maria Estela Campos who runs Autogiro, a customs and shipping company

She speaks excellent English, she seems to knows the right people and in my rather complex case, she was generally wonderful.

Welcome to the board and to Uruguay!

1. The Real State market in on the raise (both sell values and rent). Specially if you consider the values in dollars. However you still can find good choises. Piriapolis is even more "seasonal" than Punta del Este. You won't find much people there during the winter. If you don't like such quiete places, choose Mvd, or the Solymar-El Pinar area. Atlántida is also less seasonal than Piriapolis. Expenses are the costs shared by all the apartments in a building. For example: doormen salaries, cleaning of the shared areas, gardener, elevator maintenance, electricity of the shared areas and the elevators, central heating (where it's available), periodic cleaning of the water tanks, etc.. Sometimes water comsumption of the apartments is not discriminated and payed all together through the expenses too. Electricity, gas (where available), phone, taxes, and cable are always payed individually.

2. There aren't too many expats. They are dispersed all along the coast from Colonia to Punta del Este. Probably in more numbers in Montevideo, Atlántida and Punta del Este, but still a few everywhere.

3. Just ADSL and through 3G cellular modems for now. Cable is just for TV. Triple-play regulation is waiting for ANTEL to have the required infrastructure in place to be able to compete with the private cable companies; it'll take a year or two.

Thank author of this post/comment"Dedicado"

Dedicado has offered fixed wireless (antenna) on the roof for many years... it is a good alternative to the ADSL and 3G services especially if you want higher upload speeds.

Though Antel is catching up with upload speeds.

I have both ADSL and Dedicado and prefer to use Dedicado for most of my surfing.

About real state prices, check out www buscandocasa dot com dot uy, or www apartamentos dot com dot uy and see by yourself, Sorry web addresses are not allowed here, therefore the spelling :-). you can look at pictures and select location and number of rooms etc. The good deals for the buyer most likely will not be advertised in any web site of course(The market is on steady rise for coastal areas.

About the expenses, it depend. In a flat or shared property, what it is called here Propiedad Horizontal, being the law that regulates Flats or other form of co-ownership. The expenses may pay for the maintenace of the public spaces of the building, i.e cleaning, electricity for the lift, gardener, sometimes it may include the water, depending if there is a single watermeter for all the building.

I hope this helps

Martin

"Suggestions for 3 weeks in Uruguay in July??"

I've fallen in love with everything I have seen and heard about Uruguay and have decided to spend a little time in the area before making any relocation decisions. I'm Canadian and will be spending about a month in the area in July. I know it is the winter but have no control over my holiday dates. I am flying into BA and have rented an apartment there for the first week and 2 days before I return home. This leaves me with about 3 weeks in which to explore Uruguay. I would love some suggestions as to what to see, where to go in different locations in Uruguay - I want to get a sense of the country, not only Montevideo. Are car rentals affordable and is it reasonable to think that I could meander around the country without too much difficulty? I'm quickly trying to learn Spanish - so hopefully that will be helpful. Any advice/suggestions would be great - it's hard to find current information. Thanks!

I applaud your decision to have a look and do a tour before rushing in to resettle. In my view, its well worth doing.

The ROU is a pleasantly compact country, generally speaking the main roads are good and outside MVD the traffic is usually light.

If you're staying in Buenos Aires before you come, you'll probably need to use the buquebus ferry or similar to travel to Colonia del Sacramento.

Back in the days when I was hiring cars here I used to find that the best deals were available on-line via various price comparison sites..."car hire Colonia" usually does the trick. Buquebus is bookable on-line too with the best prices for fixed non-refundable tickets (link below.) Before you suffer a heart attack I should point out that the $ sign indicates Argentine pesos. :-)

You shouldn't have problems finding hotel rooms in July... except possibly at the thermal springs up in the north if your visit coincides with the schools winter break.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1292636477
