Get-togethers aimed at those with young families

Thank author of this post/commentThanks to Elaine, and my own efforts, we have managed to find and meet several ex-pats with young families here, and we are all of the opinion that we would like to continue getting together with our new friends, and hopefully meet others as well.

How I see things developing with open family get-togethers, is that those of us that have already met each-other will arrange to meet somewhere public, hopefully sometime in the next couple or three weeks at least, and then I will put a notice on this forum and wherever else I can locate, to spread the news. Most likely it will be in a park somewhere.

So if you also have a young familiy, and you are interested in meeting others in the same boat, keep your eyes and ears open, and even better, drop me a private message so I know you are keen, and then I can let you know directly when the details are confirmed, so you don't miss out.

Of course, we won't exclude anyone without children - you are welcome to come along too! (Just as long as you are keen to join in the fun and games as well! ;-)

Hi Leanne,

Delighted to hear that you've made so many connections so quickly, that's fantastic! I think your family meet-up idea is great and I'm sure it will grow pretty quickly.

When I arrived in late 2008 there were only a few expat families with young children and from what I could see Uruguay was a real hub for retiring expats. That seems to be changing. In the time I have been here I have seen at least 7 very young expat families with babies arriving, so I am sure there will be no shortage of people to get involved.

Keep us posted on the progress and let us know about any meet-up dates and locations!

The expat Sunday lunch continues to be a big hit with new faces every week so we'll be sure to spread the word there as well so if you're a new family in Uruguay remember you're always welcome to drop by and meet people.

"Get-togethers aimed at those with young families"

Hi there Leanne and to anyone else interested in young family get togethers,

We are interested in meeting up, I think it is a great idea! My son (nearly 4mths old)will be learning Spanish with his UY family so having English speaking friends would be fantastic!

If you start something regular, in a park or on a rotation at people's homes or wherever or whenever then please let me know!

Happy New Year!

Claire

Thank author of this post/comment"Summertime in Uruguay"

If there is any hint of a Uruguayan in your family then you will no doubt follow the rules and disappear out of the city from December until end of January. Some new arrivals may be wondering why the city has emptied out so much and where all the children are...the answer: they're on the beach in Rocha and Maldonaldo!

So although there may be a shortage of families and kids to fill these Montevideo gatherings for now, definitely keep at it, I'd love to see this meeting come together as so new arrivals with young families are finding it tough to integrate and its always nice to meet someone who has gone through a similar experience.

Keep us posted!

Thank author of this post/comment"Who disappears?"

Everyone says that everyone disappears from Montevideo in the summer. But, maybe that is just those that disappear that say that!

On the 2nd and 3rd, Pocitos beach was packed with people. The Rambla sidewalk there was so full of people you could hardly have a nice walk. Jan 1st had fewer people, but I think that is because there were few buses.

During the Sunday Expat meeting, the restaurant was packed full of people.

Although many people do leave Montevideo, the city is nothing like a ghost town.

Thank author of this post/comment"Expat Family Gatherings"

Just to keep any lurkers updated on these expat family gatherings....This is from Leanne, the brave new arrival who has taken it upon herself to organize these meetings:

Hi guys,

I think I have told most of you that I was going to try and organise some family get-togethers, so am finally getting organised....

The first one is planned for next weekend (Sunday 31st January) at Don Pepperoni Pizzeria in front of the Montevideo Shopping Centre (which is on Avenida Dr. Luis Alberto de Herrera). Don Peperoni is facing on to Avenida Luis Alberto de Herrera, beside the Fredo ice cream place and just a few doors down from McDonalds.

My husband Brent and I have been to the branch of Don Pepperoni at Carrasco and found that the place was quiet at 12.30, but packed out by 1.30, so I am saying we will meet there from 12.00pm for lunch. They do have highchairs, for those that need them and its a very family friendly casual place.

So the details again:

Date: Sunday 31 January

Time: From 12.00pm, if you want to get a seat

Place: Don Pepperoni in Montevideo Shopping Centre, (next door to Fredo Ice Cream and a few doors down from McDonalds on Ave Dr. Luis Alberto de Herrera)

Any recommendations for future venues would be appreciated, I think a mixture of outdoor and indoor (on different days!) will work well. Not intending on having it clash with the expat lunch at Fellinis every week, but it works for us this weekend, so that is what we are going with for now.

RSVP would be great, Brent and I will be there first (hopefully) so just nice to have some indication whether to get a table for 4 or 14! No stress if you just come along though, as we all know, kids aren't always reliable!

Hoping some of you can make it, so will look forward to catching up then.

Leanne

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3756398907
