| Confused about what weather to expect... Hello. I am sure enjoying exploring this site as my husband and I prepare for our trip to Uruguay in late Feb and early Mar.The more research I do on the weather in Uruguay, the more confused I become. We will be in the country from Feb 22 through Mar 9. We will be based in MVD, but will also be traveling throughout the country to learn as much as we can during our brief stay. What type of weather should we expect during this time of year? We want to be prepared, but also don't want to over pack :) Your input is much appreciated! Sharol |
| "Summer"
I think you should consider it summer time. Bright a light jacket. Short sleeve shirts. It is normal for apartment buildings to turn on their heat May 1st. Which sometimes is a week late, and sometimes a week or two early. I don't think anyone is thinking about heating their house in March. Today, at 3pm, my internet weather toolbar says its 95F. It should be in late summer mode... warm but not broiling hot. |
| "You'll certainly have more humidity than in Paradise,"
CA. Think a few hundred feet lower, .i.e., the Sacramento Valley floor and you'll get the the picture. Don't bring anything that will suck up the humidity. One exception, for the return fight you'll probably want sweaters because the airlines leaving here seem to turn their a/c on full and leave it that way for the first 8 hours or so. |

One item to think of is your umbrella. Last March it was warm but it did pour with rain on more than one occasion |
| "I was just going to ask about rain :)"
Thanks Annette, I was just getting ready to post a question about rain in late Feb and early Mar.Thanks too - Glen, Patrick and Ken for your quick responses. My husband adn I are having a contest to see how much stuff we can cram into carryon luggage and your input really helps. Sharol |
| "Umbrellas"
I find umbrellas to be close to useless most of the time. The wind turns them inside out and before that happens the wind blows on the rain on you so you get just as wet with or without an umbrella!Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

I went through the same debate when packing for Montevideo late October - "to bring or not to bring" - sort of thing. Finally I decided not to. It only rained once or twice when I was there, both times at night. Just to be on the safe side while there, my first week there I bought an umbrella in Ta-Ta, the national grocery chain, for about 75 pesos (around 20 pesos to a dollar = $3±) which is exactly the same Chinese made one I have here and bought in Dollarama for, what else, a dollar, and left it there in the apartment in Mvd for the next tenant. Though I never had cause to use it, if I can judge by the mine here in Montreal, they're of good quality and will generally last you a season or two. My point is, if you aren't sure what to bring, it's certain you can buy it in Mvd for less ... excepting the umbrella. They're not paying me a commission, but I have to say that you can buy all sorts of clothing in Ta-Ta and it's of reasonable quality and very inexpensive - I bought short sleeved Polo style shirts for about 150± pesos and they've stood up well to being washed. They also have undergarments, jeans, pants etc.. I had also debated bringing an anorak which I did and I was glad I had because the weather is variable, or at least in November it was, so what was a warm day often turned into a cool night with sea breeze and it was nice to have something to break the wind. Another observation, maybe pertinent only to true northerners, is that we only ever get the sun's rays at an oblique angle, even in summer, here in Montreal. In Mvd, the rays seemed a lot more direct and I found that it had a strange effect on the surface of my skin, even on days where the temps were in the low to mid 20c degrees, I seemed to be constantly dewy on the exposed skin surface yet only the tip of my nose and the back of my neck ever got what I would consider burned. |

For those of us with thinning hair, its always wise to wear a hat if you go outdoors when the sun is high. Whether its because of the cleaner air down here or because of a depleted southern ozone layer I know not but I'd advise anyone who is a bit thin on top to wear one when the sun is high. |
