Australians in La Paloma
Forum Post01/21/10 06:24Australia living in La Paloma | Australians in La Paloma Hi Everyone!Well, it was about time that I registered as a member, as I subscribed to the rss feed a couple of months ago, and I always find the information really helpful (especially the restaurant and food recommendations!!). My husband (Andres who was born in Uruguay but lived most of his life in Australia) and I moved to Uruguay around 18 months ago, and settled in La Paloma about a year ago. We are building a little hotel by the beach, and expect to be here for another few years. It is always great to meet fellow expats - there is even a small community of foreigners in La Paloma (including a grand total of about 6 native English speakers). We don't often go to Montevideo, and if we do, it is usually just to source building materials, so we don't have the opportunity to attend your get togethers. However if any of you are heading out this way, you are welcome to come and say hi (we can offer you a cappuccino from our coffee macine - what a "luxury"!!) Look forward to meeting you! |
| "Aussie in Rocha!"
You Aussies are like the Irish...there's always one of us, even in the smallest tiniest isolated pockets of the world! I'm glad you finally registered, I'd love to hear all about your experiences in Rocha. An American friend of mine built a hostel in Punta del Diablo a few years ago and learning all about his issues with locals and the Intendencia there, not to mention the terrible building standards, I'd be very interested to know if you're finding it any easier in La Paloma! Is your hotel open yet or are you still building? I'd LOVE to come see it! I've spent a lot of time up in those parts. Lived in Punta del Diablo for 4 months, spent a lot of time in Valizas, visited Cabo many times and was very impressed by the unexpected modern mansions in La Pedrera last summer. Anyway, welcome aboard, looking forward to hearing all your stories :) ps: these other foreigners in La Paloma...where are they from? Argentina? |

Yes, too true, we love to travel!!Building in Uruguay is a bit of a challenge. Luckily my husband Andres is doing the building (he has a few guys working for him), so we have control over the job (quality control is not a strong point for some of the builders here). You are welcome any time. We are still in the process of building at the moment and hope to have some rooms ready within the next couple of months. But you are totally right, Rocha is a very beautiful part of Uruguay. So, as for the other foreigners.....in La Paloma there are some Germans, French, Americans, English, Italians and Canadians that I know of. Which adds up to at least a dozen people!! |
| "Visiting La Paloma"
Sounds great...I look forward to checking out your little hotel so keep us posted on the progress, also many people would probably like to know the challenges/advantages of building in Rocha so feel free to share any stories!I have spent a lot of time in Rocha, I love it up there! The strange thing is I have been pretty much everywhere along the coast EXCEPT La Paloma, probably because someone once warned me that it is full of camping teenagers so avoid it....sounds like its worth a visit though so I might meet you some day :) If you're in Montevideo at any point let me know, would love to hear some of your stories. All the best, Elaine |

| "Hi Tamara"
Hey Tamara, Wow great to read your post this morning as we are researching La Paloma !I am Australian and my husband German. We are moving to Uruguay in May this year and will most probably settle initally in an apartment Montevideo, however we are already looking to Paloma to build our dream beach home and eventually spend as much time up there as possible. We both have spent quite a bit of time in Uruguay and are definitely planning on settling down fairly long term, starting a family and living between the coast and back to Montevideo when necessary. We are visiting Uruguay for a couple of weeks at the beginning of March. We are planning a drive up the coast and a stop over in La Paloma, hopefully to look at some properties while we are around. We're pretty impatient to get our beach house plans in motion! We would just love to call in on you, if you are around! Your plans sound fantastic and we would love to have the chance to have a good chat with some local Aussie/Urugayos living in La Paloma :) Best, Kathryn & Olaf |

| "Chalet "La Meca", La Paloma"
Hi everyone! My mom lived in La Paloma for 11 years until she passed away last June. She lived in a gorgeous Mediterranean-style chalet called "La Meca" in barrio Ananconda, two blocks away from the beach. The house is actually a replica of a "cell" of Casapueblo, in Punta del Este. It is now being rented to tourists and is also up for sale. If you or any of your relatives, friends and/or acquaintance are interested in taking a look at a very original property in La Paloma, please check out the pictures at the link below. You can then contact me privately and I will give you contact info so you can arrange to see it it in person. |
