Working and Residency process

Thank author of this post/commentQuick question,

I started my residency process (Legalization, translations, Birth Certificate with the Estado Civil) and my appointment with Immigration has been scheduled only for June 17th. Between today and my appointment with them, do you have the possibility to apply for a work?

When I asked the question, the response from the immigration officer was ''yes and no''. She told me that I can work however I need my cédula (de identidad?)... Do you know if an applicant may work in Uruguay while his residency application and other papers are being processed?

I caught this comment somewhere:

''I believe that for any time period up to 6 months foreigners can work for a Uruguayan company without a work visa or having to apply for residency. They can work on tourist visas (but they will have to renew after their first 90 days at immigration).'' Is it true?

To clarify the meaning of ''the residency application and other papers in process'', are we talking from the day you handle all the document to Immigration or do I qualify now under the term of ''residency application'' because I started the process? I am still under the 90 days tourist visa.

Thanks for your help.

"Do you know if an applicant may work in Uruguay while his residency application and other papers are being processed?"

I don't know the answer.

Previously, I thought that I could not register myself as self-employed (unipersonalized) until I had a cedula but since then, I have heard of numbers of immigrants who were forced to unipersonalize by immigration as a condition of being granted the Certificate of Arrival which is the precursor to the cedula de indentidad so it seems that it must be possible to register for the BPS system using your foreign passport number.

I fear that its a question best answered by a lawyer.

On further thought, I suppose you could always take the bull by the horns, visit a BPS office and ask them about it. If they give you an unacceptable answer, you could then try a different BPS office as few BPS offices seem to agree about anything :-)

Why not ask the people are you going to work for?

I agree with Glen. Being Uruguayan, I really don't know what is the regulation. However, I do know you won't face investigation from Inmigration officials. Inmigration officials stay on the Inmigration office and don't go chasing illegal inmigrants. The most probable difficulty you could face is a Social Security inspection on your working place. But that'll be more of your employer's problem. So ask them about it in the first place.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 4194598020
