This link is an interesting history of people who emmigrated from Uruguay to Australia and why they did so.They emmigrated to Victoria and grew from 39 in 1971 to 1, 068 in 1978.
The emmigration started during the 1960s, when Uruguay was experiencing a period of economic deterioration and increasing political instability.
I find it interesting that people are now talking about emmigrating to Uruguay and retiring there.

Hmmm.. that is quite interesting. I was very surprised to hear that Uruguayans emmigrated to Australia. I would have thought they would have gone to one of their fellow countries like Paraguay, Bolivia, etc. I guess that crime and violence in those countries must have been as bad at that time for them to leave the continent completely.
Anyone else have comments on this?

One of the problem in Latin America is high paying skilled jobs. In Uruguay, the University is free, so many kids get a good education and then look to places like the USA or Europe to find a job.

That's a shame that they educate these kids and then they take all their knowledge to another country to use it.What a waste that is. If these students when they graduated would stay and try to improve their own country then they would be paying back the government in many ways.
Not only will they help with the development of new ideas and promote new businesses. There may be a lack of big businesses in Uruguay but these are the people you need to stick around to develop it.

It is interesting how many Australians are found to be living in Uruguay as well... and why not? Australia is really not much further away than the USA. Maybe closer than some parts. One also finds that most "English" here is taught with a British Accent.

Most english taught where is taught with a british accent, not here in the u.s. we do not have a brittish accent. most places have no accents at all except for in the southern states.

As the famous adage goes, 'East, West, North or South, home is best.' However much you spend away from your country, the subconscious thought of missing and wanting to return home, normally turns into reality. Unfortunately for me Riverqueen, I cannot locate the link you are talking about.I think University Education in the US is also free, unless someone could prove me wrong. If you can study for free in Uruguay, why would you think of wanting to work elsewhere? Aren't there sufficient jobs at home?
