Recommending an Immigration Consultant or Lawyer

Thank author of this post/commentSomeone emailed recently and asked if I could recommend someone to help with the residency process. I am hesitant to recommend someone in specific but would offer these suggestions or guidelines.

The most difficult part of the process seems to be satisfying the income requirements. This is a 2 part process. First you have to satisfy an escribana of your income. Second the escribana needs to satisfy immigration.

My first recommendation is verify the escribiana has worked with immigration regularly and knows exactly what immigration needs. Second, find out from the escribana what they need from you before you have documents legalized in the USA.

Second, if someone is doing the process for you, verify that they all so all the legalizations and paper filings in Uruguay WITHOUT YOU, except for those few times YOU are REQUIRED to appear (ie: health exam, finger printing, photo). Why hire someone if you'll be waiting in line?

Also make sure your helper clearly describes to you the process and the documents you need so that you only need to legalize and present them with documents once.

I had no problem mailing documents to the Uruguayan consulates in the USA for legalization. You do not need to make a trip for that.

Thank author of this post/commentI've been told these guys are the leading lawyers for expat relocation assistance. Juan speaks perfect English and seems like a nice guy.

It may be an expensive service, I've never personally used it, but if you feel you need legal advice on anything this might be a good place to start....

Mark Teuten is another attorney that people have reported good experience with, in getting residency.
