New subjective immigration requirements?

Thank author of this post/commentIs there a new subjective immigration requirement that you must past to quality for legal residency in Uruguay?

Some are reporting that Immigration is now looking at your entries and exits from the country to determine your intent. For example, if you come for a few days and then leave, your application will apparently be rejected.

Is that a viable way to determine intent? Is is reasonable?

In my view it is reasonable to only grant legal residence status to people who intent to live in the country. However, determining that intent may be difficult.

Maybe it would be more sensible to have a period of time one must have been in the country BEFORE applying for residency would be more sensible. I mean, if someone's been in Uruguay for one day, do they really have any idea if they want to be a legal resident?

Thank author of this post/comment"Uncertainty"

Nebulous requirements seem to be popular at Immigration at the moment... first they brought us uncertain income requirements and now have added "convince us of your intent but we won't tell you how" routines. I wonder if its ministerial policy or just some senior funcionario fulfilling his fantasies?

I'm very glad I did mine back in the days before the added uncertainty was introduced.

Consider the most likely scenario. Someone looked at Atlantida and saw the need to save the rest of the country.

I'm sorry to hear this but ex-pats problems seem to be the price of popularity.

I've seen ex-pat problems involving many different nationalities in popular locations worldwide for many decades... its nothing new and its not just los Estadounidenses who cause/suffer from them.

One of the many reasons I chose Valdense for my retirement was the lack of cash machines, hotels, English speakers, shopping malls and views over the water (though thanks to agricultural prosperity, we now have two ATMs.) Its more a matter of me enjoying solitude rather than deliberate avoidance of any in-fighting :-)

This also creates/keeps jobs. Imagine how many immigration people would be out of work if the government just said "Bring in US$250, 000 and you can stay" as Canada did a while back for the Hong Kong Chinese.

I don't think the various plans are designed to increase public employment. In fact this idea should be easier to implement than their going out and seeing if you are actually living someplace. With this they can just look on the computer.

If they have a large backlog of applicants, well, the answer is to hire more people. So they don't need to add confusion.

I am saddened to see the process becoming less and less clear. Whatever the requirements might be, I think they should be objective, not subjective. However, when I did my application, there was a pre-application process.

I had to write a letter (in Spanish) describing WHY I wanted to be a resident and present it to immigration and return in 10 days. Apparently they accepted my reason(s).

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3610599879
