Immigration does and must work for FinlandThis forum post is dated 04/13/10. If you feel it is old or outdated, please follow up with a question or comment and someone may be able to update it, or reply with newer information if you have it.
| Immigration does and must work for Finland Even though Uruguay had a high number of immigrants, which totalled about 30% of the population by 1900, the country became one of the first welfare states in the world in the 1910s. It even adopted a secular constitution in 1919.How is it possible that a country like Uruguay with such a high amount of immigrants could have built one of the most successful societies in the world in the beginning of the last century? |

Except for the Indios (who were mostly wiped out) we are all immigrants here. The area where I live was very lightly settled in the late 1700s by French/Canadian refugees who settled Rosario but most of the other "cities" were founded in the mid 1800s. Our welfare state was the work of progressive Colorados (especially Batlle y Ordones) who developed a strange sort of libertarian socialism before the coming of the Soviet revolution. |
| "Indians "wiped out"??? ;-))"
"Except for the Indios (who were mostly wiped out)..."WHAT??? Who would do such a awful, unspeakable thing??? Not Uruguayans!!! :-P Watch what you say Pat! Or run the risk of bringing the Wrath of God upon you... ;-)) Take this piece of advice from: The (dark and poisonous) "Bearer of Bad News". |
| "Uruguayos or Orientales ?"
And when we thought it was over, like Ronald Reagan once said .............I hope not. |

Sorry if I caused offence. Perhaps the grizzly deeds were done by foreign mercenaries or maybe the Indios just emigrated when nobody was looking :-) Terminating the former residents with extreme prejudice, by introducing new diseases or slavery /serfdom/ appropriations were the usual methods used for land acquisition in olden days... and even today in certain places. |
| ""grizzly deeds""
What a shame...who woulda thunk? I was beginnig to suspect the Indians had been abducted by aliens from outer space! LOL!!! :-)) |
| "Dan you are starting to bore me."
Dan, I'm getting tired of you trying to restart a fight with me. This has been on for weeks and it's getting boring! You started qualifying Uruguayans as violent, discriminating, militarist, etc., etc.. I tryied to take all of your frivolous qualifications in a more balanced way, for example, explaining what happend to the uruguayan indians. I supposed our discussion was ended. I've even appologized if some of the things I said were preceived as offensive by you. You never appologized for being offensive with Uruguayans, and not only that... In the following days you opened several posts with negative considerations about Uruguay and Uruguayanas as if you wanted to re-open the discussion. (By the way, the State Department's information is not the bible. Try other more knowledgeable sources.) I decided not to answer again. But now you insist once more. Do you like continuous fight? I find it a lost of time. |
| "Sir..."
Believe it or not, you are NOT the center of the Universe. The above posts had NOTHING to do with you. I did not address you. I have no interest in engaging you at all.I was clearly responding to Patrick's statements. Please REFRAIN from addressing me. |
| "Back to the subject."
"How is it possible that a country like Uruguay with such a high amount of immigrants could have built one of the most successful societies in the world in the beginning of the last century?"I don't really think inmigration is a problem. Moreover, I see it as an opportunity. So I guess I don't get the meaning of the question completely. The "melting pot" brought not only a lot of people longing to get a life out of hard work, but also a lot of new ideas and points of view. I also don't really think that Uruguay "build one of the most successful societies in the world". It was a successful society in many social aspects, but failed to build a permanently successful economy because it failed to create long-term economic strengths. Many of the better years of our economy (30s to early 50s) were due more to circumstancial positioning than structural strengths. And the consequence was our long stagnation and decay of the second half of the XXth century. However, it is true that Uruguay managed to build a stable, relatively happy society, along absorving huge ammounts of inmigrants. The US, and Australia managed to do the same with much lasting results. So, there no contradiction between inmigration and social construction. It depends on how the problems associated with the "melting" process is conducted. |
| "Enough."
Dan, do you think everybody in this forum is naive? Once again, I tried you to stop this fight, but you insist. For me, it's enough. Be happy. |
