| I am from the UK, legalisation question I am just in the process of getting all of my documents together.I need to legalise my marriage certificate and also birth certificates for all the family (children too?) I can't find out how to do this in the UK. I called the Uruguay Consulate in London and they said I have to get it done at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Is this correct? Do I need to take then to the Uruguayan Consulate in London? The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is a UK government organisation so I don't really understand as I thought that it had to be the Uruguayan Consulate in London? Thanks if you can help me. I am already finding it baffling and I am just on the first bit! Thanks Lucy |

It sounds vaguely religious doesn't it? :-).What you have to do is get all your documents stamped twice... first by the Foreign and Commomwealth Office apostille service situated in leafy Milton Keynes (which assures foreigners that your UK documents are genuine) and then by the Uru consul in London. It paid me to get two copies apostilled as you lose the UK copies of birth and marriage certificates which you submit to the Uru registrars here. I have posted an FCO link below. |

Hi Patrick Thanks for your quick response.Milton Keynes only do it by post now. Do you know if I need to send photocopies or originals and do I need to go through the same process for each of my children. I suppose that I do if I want them to get their own passports eventually. Thanks Lucy |

When I got mine done, the FCO office was still in the Old Admiralty Buildings near Trafalgar Square. I went in person and arrived very early in the morning because of the many agency bods with armloads of their clients' documents to be apostilled. It seemed to be the case that you either turned up in person c/w all the certificates, you sent a friend with all the certificates or you hired an agency to do it for you. Google throws up dozens of such agencies in the UK. You need to submit original documents or official copies from the registrar for apostilling... photocopies were not acceptable. As far as I know each of your kids will need their certificates apostilled too. |
