Forum Post03/24/10 11:29New Yorkers in Temecula, CA | Basic currency question Would someone please let me know what are the following values?U$S 100 = U.S. dollars, I think. $U 100 = Uruguay Peso? $ 1.700, 00 = Uruguay Peso? Thanks for your help. Char |

Generally yes... but $1.700, 00 could be US$'s. Always look at the context. For example an apartment for "$500" is very unlikely to be 500 pesos, but would be 500 dollars. Of course, an apartment for "$7000" could be a *very luxurious* apartment in dollars or an very inexpensive one in pesos. |

Usually (but not always) prices are marked as $ = pesos and U$S = US dollars. As Linda says, look at the context. |
| "Dollars or Pesos."
The legal sign for Uruguayan Pesos in Uruguay is "$". So if you read $, then it is Pesos. In some especial cases, in private commercial proposals, in areas where dollars are mostly used for pricing, some would use "$U" just to make it clear that are Uruguayan Pesos.Dollars are never marked as "$" in Uruguay, except by unaware foreigners. They may lead to confussion if they are treating with locals. The signs used for dollars in documents and price labels in Uruguay, may be: U$S, US$, or USD. When there's no sign at all, or when it is not explicit in speach("pesos" or "dólares"), it depends of the context. But a practical general rule is: Presume it's pesos, except when buying cars, houses or land, in wich case you should presume dollars. |

I checked the price of insulin (medication for diabetes) on a pharmacy website and it sold for $ 1.700. This is almost equal to free in U.S. currency, I must have make an error. |
| "1.700 pesos"
Remember in Spanish they use a . not a , for the 1, 000 separate. At the current rates 1700 pesos / 19.35 = US$87 |

Lee:Thanks, the cost is more in line with what I pay here. Gary |
| "Cost of medications in Uruguay vs Usa -"
First you must know the Dollar value that day in Uruguay, also important to know is if your buying the same amount or dosage whatever it may be. Also if your price is with Insurance or Medicare etc. And be sure that the price is the cheapest in Uruguay without Insurance.Walmart in the States is famous for various things one is to sell cheap, in Uruguay for what I see "Tienda Inglesa the Uruguayan Walmart" is on the other end. More than information these are questions, somebody correct me if I'm wrong ? |

Jorge & Florence:Thanks for the info. I use several medications and plan to do extensive research to make informed choices. There is so much to learn but this is what makes life interesting. Gary |
| "Cost of medication."
I've posted this before, but let me remind you about this again. When you live in Uruguay you most probably will join a Mutualista (Medicare private organization). If a doctor of the Mutualista medicates you, he/she'll give you an "order" for the Mutualistas's drugstore. You hand the order, pay a fixed ticket (7-8 dollars a box in the case of my own Mutualista), and get the medicine. You just go and buy medicines in commercial drugstores at the published prices when you auto-medicate, or the commercial price is lower than the fixed ticket price of your Mutualista. Got it? |
| "Pre-conditions"
Gary, To be more precise about your case: When there are pre-conditions as yours in the moment you join the Mutualista some treatments and medication may be left aside of your benefits (that is, you may have to pay for it appart from the normal monthly pay). In this case, you may have to buy your medication from commercial drugstores. This is because the whole system is founded on inter-generational solidarity; and people is suppose to contribute to the system during their whole life, including the youth periods when you don't use too much resources. Anyway, some mutualistas would probably let you in with all the benefits. You'll have to ask and get the better agreement to your needs. |
| "Mutualista?"
Alberto:I have not gotten to health insurance yet. It is, of course, on my list. Gary |
