| Attorney for processing residency Hello, Can anyone recommend an attorney to assist with obtaining residency? Thanks |
| "Attorney or Consultant?"
Are you specifically looking for an attorney for some reason? If not, I think Ana Ines would be a good choice. She works by the hour and takes you through the process, and includes transportation (within reason). One client of an attorney said he was caught off guard because he was expected to pay the taxi to take them around town and didn't have any small bills. So, always make sure you know what is included or not. Taxi fare isn't a bill deal, but getting documents legalized can be (cost and effort). So there are no surprises and you always know what is happening. Not to mention you get to have a neat adventure of seeing first hand the bureaucratic wheels of Uruguay turning. You can find her by clicking Main Menu and the selecting Experts. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

In my experience, you will get a similar service with a good consultant as with a good lawyer. The only real difference is in the fees they will charge you.Depending on your particular circumstances and your luck, the process can go quickly or slowly. In my case I lost 3 months because a funcionario misread my evidence of retirement income wrt the ownership of a rented house in the UK... an error which required 4 senior funcionarios to read the document and sign statements attesting that the initial funcionario had misread it. This process took a month but that was quicker than starting the application again from scratch. The consultant I used went off the rails shortly after he had helped me but I've heard good reports about Ana Ines. As Glen says, a few trips to the immigration offices in Missiones in the company of someone like Anna will provide you with an excellent introduction to the ways of our funcionarios. I usually find that a good book, some music and a picnic makes such encounters much more pleasant. :-) |
| "Disappointment"
The most cries of disappointment seem to come from those who simply hand their papers over to someone with the idea that it will be magically completed in a set number of months.Things can be slow, slow, and even slower. They don't always "make sense" from "our perspective." For example (not relating to Residency), to get one document legalized and filed in the Registro Civil. I was told the legalization would take "up to 3 months or more." It was closer to 8 months. I chose to have it sent to the embassy by the Ministry of External Relations... which is an easy but slow process. The slow speed was apparently compounded by the person who accepted my paper and money, pocketed the money and they have to complete an investigation before legalizing the document. After it was legalized I thought it would be just a few days for it to be filed in the Registro Civil... but I think that was close to another 8 months! On issue with Immigration is if they need something, they just wait. They don't tell you. So you need to check now and then if something is needed. And, among the waiting, document expire so you're bound to need to get new ones. Particularly your income statement. Also the Montevideo Police report they get expires, so if they need to get another one that can delay things, and you can see how if that takes too long, maybe your income statement can expire again! | "Sense of Adventure"
I think it helps to go with a sense of adventure, instead of an expectation that there is any set process and time frame that applies to everyone.Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
