Argentina vs Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentHi Diane,

When you say that you are considering Argentina for retirement, do you mean Buenos Aires or do you have somewhere else in mind? If you want a location like Buenos Aires then Uruguay is not an alternative for you. The first word people usually use to describe Uruguay, even the capital city of Montevideo is "tranquilo" - relaxed, quiet, chilled out. To some people that can mean boring, it all depends on what you're looking for.

To answer your questions:

- Is health care good?

This is not such an easy question to answer. In general the standard of treatment is what you would expect, but as in any country it depends where you go. I have never heard any complaints from expats about the level of service and treatment in Associacion Espanola, Medica Uruguay or The British Hospital. If you have specific health care needs you will have to ask specific questions, but in general it is fine.

- Are people from other countries welcomed by the Uruguayan people?

Yes and no. In general Uruguayans are very intrigued by and interested in foreigners. They simply cannot fathom why on earth people would want to move from "perfect and prosperous" Europe or USA to live in what they refer to as a 3rd world country! The attitude of "take advantage of the gringo" does not really exist in Uruguay the way it does in say Costa Rica or certain parts of Mexico. All that being said, if you plan to come here and live as you do elsewhere then you will be very disappointed and will no doubt irritate people along the way. If you wish to integrate and live the Uruguayan way then you will no doubt be welcomed.

- Is housing expensive? (read online that it is similar in cost to BA)

Again, an "overall" answer is not really possible. Are you specifically asking about Montevideo or Punta del Este? or Uruguay as a whole? You can buy very cheap land in the countryside. Real estate in Punta del Este is insanely overpriced and there are houses "worth" millions! Montevideo is a city, and as such there are many different neighbourhoods all varying in price. I have said before that the "Buscando Casa" website is a good way to get an idea of property prices in Montevideo. The link to this website is below, some rudimentary Spanish is necessary.

- Are living costs reasonable?

What is reasonable? This question has been addressed many times in many different ways throughout this forum. There are also articles about the cost of living in our free ebook. In fact most of your questions are already answered elsewhere on the site so feel free to take a look around.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 617604345
