Citizenship

Thank author of this post/commentHi

My wife and I will be arriving in Montevideo Feb 1, 2010. We will be applying for citizenship as retied persons while we are there. I read on one site that this takes from a year to a year and a half to complete. Does anyone know if we must stay in Uruguay during this process?

I assume you made a typo when writing citizenship rather than residency. Once you have acquired resident status, you have to wait a while before applying for citizenship.

When you submit your residency application you cease to be a tourist so if you wish to leave you must get a paper from immigration (for a small fee) which allows you to leave and re-enter the ROU without reestablishing your tourist status and having to restart the application process. I don't think that there are restrictions on the length of time you spend out of the ROU but I'm not certain.

If you are using a lawyer or facilitator to assist you with the application, they would be the people to ask.

Hi Roy,

As Patrick said you have to get permission to leave during the period that your residency is still being "processed", but I also think you have to have to be in the country for a certain amount of time during that period, I'm not definite of the length of time and whether it has to be consecutive or just in total. I will ask around and see if I can find out for you.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1352241432
