| Citizenship HiMy wife and I will be arriving in Montevideo Feb 1, 2010. We will be applying for citizenship as retied persons while we are there. I read on one site that this takes from a year to a year and a half to complete. Does anyone know if we must stay in Uruguay during this process? |

I assume you made a typo when writing citizenship rather than residency. Once you have acquired resident status, you have to wait a while before applying for citizenship. When you submit your residency application you cease to be a tourist so if you wish to leave you must get a paper from immigration (for a small fee) which allows you to leave and re-enter the ROU without reestablishing your tourist status and having to restart the application process. I don't think that there are restrictions on the length of time you spend out of the ROU but I'm not certain. If you are using a lawyer or facilitator to assist you with the application, they would be the people to ask. |

Hi Roy, As Patrick said you have to get permission to leave during the period that your residency is still being "processed", but I also think you have to have to be in the country for a certain amount of time during that period, I'm not definite of the length of time and whether it has to be consecutive or just in total. I will ask around and see if I can find out for you. |
