Moving to Uruguay

I am busy ooking into moving to Uruguay initially for a year possibly longer I am trying to find what new cars are available makes and models but the websites I find only give me Hyundai Kia Mercedes and Porsche surely there is a bit more choice? Can anyone give me a good website to look up prices?

New car prices are fixed (in more ways than one.) The car pull-out supplement in Sunday's El Pais usually offers a list of most of them.

Looking at last Sunday's edition there is a full page of new prices but I don't see details of a handy web link listing them. At the bottom of the page is an e-mail address "por consultas." Its preciosautos@gallito.com

If you have an enquiry for a particular make/model ask away.

New vehicles are usually described as "0km."

You might try wading through the link below which lists the gallito auto classified... a mix of new and used cars. Mercadolibre dot com dot uy also offers a selection

A quick list of the manufacturers quoted...

BYD, Chery, Chevrolet, Fiat, Ford, GWM, Hyundai, Kia, Mini, Peugeot, Renault, Suzuki, Zotye, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Citroen, FAW, Fiat, Ford, Geeley, Honda, Hyundai, JAC, Kia, Mercedes, Nissan, VW, Volvo, Dodge, EFFA, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lifan, Mitsubishi, Porche, SMA, Ssangyong, Subaru, Toyota, and ZXauto.

Most of the unfamiliar names will be Chinese.

I drive a Mexican Nissan double cab pick-up as such a vehicle is classed as essential production machinery for farmers. It is thus chargeable to the farm account and is not included in IP valuations (wealth tax.) :-)

Hi Britanico. I moved to Montevideo in February and am looking to buy a used car here. I'm not sure where you're moving from, but compared to the US, car prices here are outrageous. You will spend at least $10, 000 for a car from the late 90's to early 00's and they will have high mileage. If you're looking for a new car, which you say you are, then brace yourself for sticker shock!

As you might expect in an Alice in Wonderland economy, depreciation seems to work differently here :-)

When I first arrived here in 2006 I had set aside 5k U$S to buy myself a used car. After examining a number of very old and sickly rolling wrecks, I took the plunge and bought a 9 year old Nissan Sentra B13 in good condition for 6.5k U$S with 150k kms on the clock from a neighbour in Colonia Valdense where I live.

I liked the old thing. It was reliable, reasonably comfortable, had cheap and easily available spare parts and did 15 kms to a liter of gasoline.

When my SO finally sold our farm in England and moved over here, he took an instant dislike to it complaining that it was noisy (which it was) and pointed out that as farmers, a pick-up truck would be much more useful.

After 3 years it had nearly 200k kms on the clock and friend of mine in Colonia Valdense agreed to sell it for me. Imagine my surprise when he appeared next day to escort me to see the purchaser's escribano in Rosario to sign the papers and give me the 8k U$S he'd got for it :-)

I finally bought a new Mexican Nissan 2.3 liter gasoline double cab pick-up truck for 21.5k U$S which was actually cheaper than its equivalent in the UK (but only because of tax differences.)

Vehicles are expensive to buy here but once bought, the rates of depreciation are small or in my case negative as prices tend to rise and fall in line with the state of the UY economy.

The other consideration when buying a vehicle is the annual patente (road fund tax.) To over-generalize wildly, the older the car the lower the initial purchase price and the lower the annual patente. To further complicate matters, patente is a local tax and each departmento charges different rates. As Alberto will tell you, I'm a "Colonooligan" who lives in Uruguay's wild west (aka Colonia departmento) where we have a tax-cutting rogue called Dr Zimmer as our Intendente who pitches our patente rates low for our benefit and to "poach" vehicles from Montevideo where patente rates are very high :-) We are having legal battles over this at the moment.

Happy motoring :-)

Thank author of this post/comment"Just a tourist visa"

Welcome. :-)

On arrival here you will be given a 90 day tourist visa. You can renew it only once at your nearest immigration office so twice yearly you'll have to have a day out in Buenos Aires (not so terrible) and get a new visa when you return.

On a tourist visa you can live here, buy a vehicle or even property.

If you want to acquire permanent resident status you'll need all manner of documents suitably stamped by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Apostile department and the Uru-consul in London. There is a good article on the subject elsewhere on the site.

Patrick, you crack me up!!!>)

But, tis true, tis true, tis true! Maybe, because we're on the "Down" side of the Planet, we get the wrong 'Spin' on things, hehe.

Seems like the real bad nasty deal is the buying of Used Cars. The new ones aren't that bad. Watch the Chinese though. They seem to be taking a 'shotgun approach to the South American market. If you drive down the Giantassio and count dealerships it goes like this, Chinese, Chinese, Fiat, Chinese, Chinese, Chinese, Ford, Chinese, Chinese, Nissan.

Most of the Chinese brands can be bought New for under about $US 11K or so. Which is what you would pay for a decent low mileage used Ford, Fiat, or Nissan. The Chinese cars don't seem to hold up well though, and the parts issue is potentially scary.

@Radu from Romania. If you read above you'll find most of what you need to know. Find a Uruguayan consulate nearest you. They will tell you what you need, but the basic list is; Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Certificates of Good Conduct (from your local Police Department), ALL these documents must be certified and stamped by the consulate. Then you're ready to come here on Tourist Visas. When here go directly to the Registro de Migracion and apply for a 'Permanent' Residency. Forget about the Temporary one, you won't need it. Get someone to help you when you go there. On this site there are people who will do that for a fee, it is well worth it. When you have "Applied" for Residency, the 90 day Visa limit is waived because your Passport is in Tramite (Process).

Do you speak Spanish? If not, begin learning right now. Oh, and most important, take a deep breath, and Relax.>)

The prices you often see displayed in the windows of new cars are rarely the prices you actually pay as they are usually quoted without IVA and various other things.

The motoring section of Sunday's edition of El Pais usually has a page quoting the actual retail price you will pay (see above.)

The new pick-up I bought last November had a price of 17k U$S displayed on its windshield but it actually cost me 21, 600 U$S.

Discounts are exceedingly rare as the local motor trade mafia operates a system of fixed prices. The only sweeteners I got were 2 glasses of good whisky and a false receipt for 19, 978 U$S which put the vehicle into a lower patente band.

A final word of warning concerns fuel. My fine new truck came with fumes and half a teacup of gasoline in the tank so your first stop will be the nearest filling station :-)
