Corruption

This is a serious Warning, if you want to migrate to Uruguay! While you made your Decision to change the Place of Life and request for your Documents , which are needed to migrate to Uruguay , you can be a Victim of Corruption of the Immigration Administracion. All your presented Documents will be copied and outhandeled to criminals, which make contact with you , to suck all your Money from you. So this happened to a Friend of my. The Vriminals have contact to Administratives with high influence and access tobthe Immigrants Data. Once the Criminal contacted you, it can happen everywhere, because they know where you live , they will " help you" ( get rid of your Money) . They are very clever and follow you untill you are ruinated! Sure you want to buy a House, and for sure you as a foreigner have to pay 3 x more Money for the same House, like an Uruguayan! The Criminals are Masons, and will serve you with Realestate Agents, Architects, Construction Professionals, which bend you over! At least if you try to fight them , you will get lectured! They stick together against foreigners and desocialize yourself, so that you will be at least alone! Nobody will testify against his Neighbour and at least you can get crazy ! Uruguay! This Nation is full of evil jobless Abuser, waiting for a foreign Victim to bend over!

Thank author of this post/comment"These things can happen but..."

Four years ago I hired an immigration advisor who did a great job for me at a sensible price (plus meals :) and I had no complaints. 18 months later I started to hear bad stories about him losing papers and being evasive... I suppose he must have fallen on hard times.

Its all very well to suggest that you can do the immigration process yourself but to a newly arrived foreigner without much Espanol and knowledge of the system, its a daunting task. Having been through it myself I assisted my SO making the application in person but for a first-timer, it can be difficult.

I lived here in Colonia Valdense for 6 months before deciding to buy a chacra and approached the owner myself rather than using an inmobilario. I paid more than market rates for the land because it wasn't for sale, because the owner was a tight-fisted individual and most of all, because it was exactly what I wanted after viewing nearly 300 chacras. My local escribana is the fiercest legal-eagle I've ever met and the gestores at my local centro commercial are wonderfully efficient.

In my view the wise incomer should take his/her time to get to know who is who and what is what before investing their money.

This "David" has spouted evil about Uruguay in a german expat forum. He brought 2 comments in (bad)english and then changed into german. Difficult to find out what his motives are, or if this is a hoax???

I don't think we should hold non-native speakers of English to the same standards as native speakers.

It seems this person complained not about immigration HELPERS.. but that information was passed directly from immigration to those seeking the scam him. Now that would be a very serious allegation.

Certainly there would be those in the Ministry of the Interior who would take them seriously as well, and there and not in a public forum would be the appropriate place to express them.

More details, or more clear details of how David feels taken advantage of would be good. Buying a house is a voluntary thing and I hardly see how someone can force you into it. I have no doubt some might offer property at a higher price, but the answer there is to simply take your time to look.

It is not appropriate to post names here, but it would be nice to get a better idea of exactly how your being taken advantage of, so people know what to look out for.

"Anti-Uruguay propaganda."

One should take David's post as one would take any anonym garbage. He could be a foreign expat with a very bad personal experience, looking for revenge on the whole country. He could be a Uruguayan trying to discourage inmigration. He could be one of the Argentinean "piqueteros" following up their anti-uruguayan campaign. He could be a guy abandoned by his Uruguayan girlfriend. Who knows? If he had been more austere in his sayings about the country, he could have sound more convincing. But what he says is so far from everybody's experience that not a bit of it can be taken seriously.

Some excellent points. But also let's remember that although IN GENERAL expats have great experiences in Uruguay some are less happy.

I know one family that moved here sight unseen, had a container on the way... but after 2 weeks left because they didn't like the real estate they saw in Atlantida.

Someone was just saying that another couple lasted 2 or 3 days.

I don't think these people had the kind of experiences David did, but simply didn't find Uruguay to be what they expected.

"Wonderful Uruguay"

This man David is totally wrong... I have been renting an apartment for two years in Montevideo. Coming and going between Europe and Uruguay with my son and he recently received all of his first temporary resident document and will have his permanent one in February. We have already shipped our furniture and other things here and have no problems but meeting wonderful, kind and honest people. The solicitor that helped with everything and our real estate agent were all first class and spoke wonderful English. We have made many kind people in our building and when we are away in Russia for months on end everything is as we left it. I have friends in many other Latin American countries from Russia and believe me they are regretting not coming here first. Belize is totally corrupt. I have never met nicer people and have a feeling of living in Italy in the 1960's. Lately with the crisis in Spain and the USA many young Uruguayans are returning home to find a better life here then there, thus making property prices higher along with other things. But still I have not found a better place for the money and lack of crime then Uruguay.

Glen, there is a big distance between the experience you are telling us about and what our anonym friend says. By the way, I wouldn't ever buy a property in Uruguay without seeing it; much less in a country I don't know. It could be sad those people got dissapointed; however, I would never say that was a disfortunate experience, it is just the kind of experience one gets from lack of prudent behaviour.

Bad English, no English, blog troll, no troll, whatever...there IS corruption in Uruguay, but it's all relative...by most accounts, it's not nearly as bad as in other parts of the world...For anyone interested in moving to Uruguay (or anywhere!) permanently, the wise thing to do is to take enough time to learn about the country, its people, and its culture, and decide whether or not you can live with the existing levels of corruption, and all other positive and negative things the country has to offer.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1675109620
