Beef Industry

Thank author of this post/commentBeef is big business for Uruguay. I've read in many threads how the taste is far superior. I can't wait to try it. Milly asked about Mad Cow Disease. So I looked it up. Uruguay has been testing for BSE since 1972 and declared BSE free as recent, that I could find, as November, 2006.

Well, I have heard from a friend that the beef in this country is indeed tasty and very delicious.

Thank author of this post/comment"The famous Uruguayan beef!"

Indeed you will have no shortage of ways to try the great meat in Uruguay, they serve it in about a million different cuts! I think I've decided that entrecot, pulpon and vacio are among my favourites, but one of these days I might write out all the different names from the menus here and have a Uruguayan meat eater help me translate them.

There are so many different parillas around town for you to try out your steak. I like La Otra in Pocitos (on the corner of Juan Perez and Tomas Diago) but you'll find some great parillas at Mercado del Puerto (for a much higher price unfortunately). Anyone else know some good parillas to recommend?

Thank author of this post/comment"Mad cow disease."

Mad cow disease is one of those errors humans make when trying to twist Nature. In this case, it's the consecuence of converting a million-year rumiant in a carnivore by feeding it with animal flour. :( Uruguayan cows are fed mostly with grass. Even finishing them with grain is not that common and it's being now under discussion. Hormones are prohibitted by regulations. That's why our meat is better in terms of flavour and health.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 756401328
