| Medical Insurance..Choosing a Company? Having just recovered from tonsilitis (and a very educational 6 hours trip to Masiel Public Hospital in Ciudad Vieja!) I am trying to get my had around all the healthcare options here...not doing very well so far!So I was told that public emergency services are terrible here and if I call an ambulance it may never come! Is this true? Do I have to be a member of one of those private companies like SEMM, SUAT or UCM just to get an ambulance? Or can I call them even if I am not a paying member? Is there any way to easily compare the services and prices these companies offer or do I have to trawl through all their websites? Can some techy genius PLEASE create a price comparison page for these companies!! |
| It said that most people that can subscribe to a medical plan in Uruguay actually get to do so. It is claimed that first aid in public hospitals is entirely free of charge(just like the ambulance services.) In the initial case too, the medicine will also be free of charge. However, in the case of hospitalization, you will pay according to the kind of service rendered. The private hospitals will charge you for any services they will offer. |
| I definitely have to challenge this claim...NOTHING is ever totally free of charge. True that basic medical assistance in Uruguay's public hospitals is very cheap (not free) but you will have to wait a loooooooooooooooooooong time to get seen. |
