| Driving / Exploring Uruguay via Car We will be in coming to Uruguay in January 2011. We are planning our trip now and appreciate any helpful comments / feedback / advice. After we spend some time in Montevideo (~2 days), we'd like to get a rental car and drive to Salto then back to Montevideo. Before we make any assumptions we have a few questions. We'd like to drive 1 west from Montevideo to Colonia del Sacramento then north on 21, 24 then 3 until we get to Salto. a). What are the general conditions of the roads? I was told it took 2 6 hours days to drive to Salto from Montevideo - Is this accurate? b). Are the chances good of finding hotels along our drive on a "winging" it approach during the week / weekend? Or should we make reservations ahead of time? c). Any advise of how best to get a rental car? Insurance? Drivers license or permit? Is it best to simply take care of all this after we land in Montevideo? d). Any advice on how / where to fish for Golden Dorado? I've been discussing options with Los Gauchos Outfitters but not sure I want to spend $1400 for a one-day fishing trip. I'm happy to rent the equipment, get a permit and fish from the bank... Any advice? Thanks is advance, Todd & Christy |

In my view a car is the best way to tour Uruguay. We do have excellent long distance buses but they mostly go to and from MVD rather than from one city to another across country.Ruta 1 (MVD-Colonia del Sacramento) is in good condition. Ruta 2 which leaves R1 at Rosario and heads north is a bit pot-holed until the Soriano border but first class after that. The road north from Colonia is also in good condition. Elsewhere, I know not :-) I reckon that Salto - MVD would take much longer than 2.6 hours. January is peak tourist season so it might well pay you to book some hotels in advance. On the other hand, most January tourists go to the river or seaside. In the days when I used to rent cars I found that I got the best deals on line using links from a rentals comparison site rather than direct from rental companies... but that was 4 years ago. I live 200+ kms from the sea so can't be of much help wrt dorados :-) |
| "Dorados and Salto."
Patrick, dorados are fresh water fish. They live in the Rio Uruguay, and the Rio Negro. I don't think it's easy to find but 1400 dollars for a fishing tour seems way too expensive and won't give much warranty about finding one, anyway. Fishermen love them cause they may be rather big and fight a lot; and those of us that don't fish love them cause they are excelent specially for the parrilla. Unfortunately it's a fish you would almost never find in at shops in Montevideo. I'm sorry I cannot help Todd and Christy more than that. As far as the trip. It'll take 2.5 hours to get to Colonia from MVD. Both Colonia-Salto and Montevideo-Salto will take 5-6 hours. Salto is more of a winter tourism spot becase of the termal springs, but in January it's a convenient stop for northern Argentineans and Paraguayans traveling by car to Uruguay or Argentinean and Brazilian tourist going back and forth from Argentina to Brazil. So I would expect problems to find good accomodation. At Salto I recommend the Horacio Quiroga hotel. It's by the lake of the Salto electric dam, in a park with termal springs (and termal facilities within the hotel itself), and just at the edge of the city. Have a nice trip! |

I wonder if that isn't pesos rather than dollars? While prices are rising rapidly here, 1400 U$S is still a great deal of money... especially for river fishing. I'll ask my friend Sergio who goes fishing on the central lakes whether he knows of anyone who might provide a better offer. I've heard that someone breeds sturgeon up on the Rio Negro but the caviare all goes to the US :-) |
