Beginners Spanish

I love reading about how foreigners survive in Uruguay with no Spanish. This guy openly admits his Spanish is minimal, but he gets along just fine...

"I walked north along Calle Gaboto, my big rucksack on my back and my small day pack on my front. The morning was warm and bright just like you expect every day in South America to be. After a few blocks I saw a parked cab with his windows down. I stopped and said �Amigo, You� uh..� I pointed at myself then at his cab, towards Avenida 18 de Julio then back at the taxi. He said something in Spanish and pointed to the open door behind me. I left to find another cab.

I walked to the next intersection, just in time to flag down at taxi speeding along. I got in and said �Terminal de Omnibus. Bus Terminal.� Como? �Trayze Crusez?� I said holding up 3 fingers. Ah Treis Cruces, si. He flipped on the metre and we sped away."
