Lost in the World

Thank author of this post/comment

Q: What country are you native to, and/or other places you've lived?

A: The USA, but I've been living in New Zealand for quite some time.

Q: What are the main factors behind your decision to become an Expat?

A: My parents moved to New Zealand when I was very young. I don't like it much so I want to find another place I can call home.

Q: Are you looking for city or rural living?

A: I want to find a nice plot of land so I can start an organic farm and be self-sufficient. I don't eat much meat and would like to go 100% vegetarian.

It would be best if I was within a bicycle ride of a good size town.

Q: What do you hope to find in Uruguay? Tranquility? Cheap Living? Organic Food? New Friends?

A: All of it. Especially cheap living and organic food. Friends are easy.

Q: What has been most frustrating about your plans to move to Uruguay

A: It is hard to find enough specific information.

Hello Andy!

Nice interview, I can see you are a vegetarian, me too. I have to say it is difficult to be a vegetarian in Uruguay but not impossible.

I can see by your post that you find difficult to find information. I have a relocation business for expats in Uruguay,

Drop me a line if you have some questions.

Saludos

Graciela

Welcome.

You'll find that a lack of specific information is a continuing problem because no two funcionarios (officials) will ever tell you the same thing. OTOH the supreme advantage of country life is that the vast majority of funcionarios seem to be allergic to the campo so remain in the cities instead :-)

If you tire of your bicycle, horses are deeply unfashionable here so are incredibly cheap compared with other places.

Sad to say the very strong peso and local inflation has generally taken the cheapness out of the ROU.

I think Uruguay is an easy and great place to be a vegetarian. This is especially true when cooking for yourself. In the places I've lived there have always been numerous fruit and veggie stands within a couple blocks.

Eating out can sometimes be a challenge. There are probably a few restaurants that have nothing on the menu which does not include meat or cheese (meat fat).

However, in general you'll find that most restaurants have some nice non-meat based dishes. Some like to stick ham and/or cheese (meat fat) in things and not list it on the menu, so ask.

Last year a local pal of mine asked me over for a veggie dinner she was cooking. The main course consisted of potatoes liberally smeared with cheese and topped with many small cubes of ham. When I asked her about the ham she assured me that it was just a garnish and not really meat at all :-)

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1551178470
