new arrivals to be

Thank author of this post/commenthello all...

we will be arriving in uruguay on a shoestring budget somtime around july.

we hope to buy a few (10?)acres in the interior and become localvores.

my question is how do the local housing authorities feel about do-it-yourself style housing on your own land? i've seen some really nice converted shipping containers for instance.

also about getting a generator into uruguay with my household stuff. can it be done or is it a general proscription on things with a gas/diesel engine?

thanks in advance :-D

Dennis

Thank author of this post/comment"Rural planning controls"

The good news is that there are no rural planning, building controls nor property taxes on rural houses. Anything you might build is liable to BPS charges in theory but in practice, the BPS doesn't go looking for construction works in the campo and any liabilities are forgiven after 10 years.

The ownership of farmland up to two hundred and seventy something hectares renders you liable to a BPS charge of about 10, 000 pesos a year with no benefits. OTOH if you register yourself as a unipersonalized small farmer, the liability increases to about 16, 500 pesos a year but you are entitled to benefits like free healthcare, accident insurance and a tiny pension one day :-)

With our climate here I reckon that knocking up a modest house would provide you with much more comfort than a shipping container but this is a free country so you can do as you please :-)

The freebie import is for "household effects" only. They didn't object to my electric power tools but anything with an internal combustion engine was a nono. I even had to make a sworn statement that my admiralty anchor was a decorative household effect and not a device for preventing boats from floating away :-)

The ROU has a truly enormous rural electricity grid so there is a good chance of you finding some land with mains electricity available. Its expensive here but not as expensive as running a generator.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 3966992761
