generous fun

Can an American in Uruguay have some serious and generous fun over in this blessed place?

I guess that all depends on what you mean by "fun"...

Uruguay has many things that can be enjoyed for free - beautiful beaches, clean air, amazing wildlife, fantastic colourful sunsets...

But if "serious and generous fun" means can you have fun without spending money...Uruguay is not a very cheap place, but it can definitely be enjoyed on a budget if you're willing to do some research in Spanish and live as the locals do.

Don't stay in big hotels, stay in small posadas. Don't eat at touristy restaurants, most of the local parillas (grills) make amazing steaks and are reasonably priced. Don't get taxis everywhere, the bus system is efficient so make use of it. If you are smart with your money then you will have enough to enjoy the "serious" fun, such as outdoor concerts, football matches, theatre shows etc.

I think it costs a whooping 10 pesos to enter the Zoo... and it may be free certain days of the week.

I definitely wouldn't recommend for anyone to go to Montevideo Zoo. I went recently and its quite depressing - old dilapidated concrete enclosures, very little vegetation, the animals look miserable and the place isn't well maintained at all.

One fun (and cheap!) activity is to rent out a paddle boat on the lake in Parque Rodo. Its only 25 pesos for half and hour and its really enjoyable.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2727648712
