| general questions Hi. I would like to ask a couple general questions about Uruguay- if anybody has the time, it would be MEGAwonderful to hear back !1) How many english language TV channels are avail ? 2) Are there any good gyms ? 3) Approx costs associated with getting the cedula ( legal + govt fees ) 4) Health insurance cost ( a GOOD policy ) 5) Cost for a NICE, smaller, new house in good neighbourhood close to city center Thats all, folks! Thanks muchly |

I think there are NO English TV CHANNELS. But, a lot of the programming is in English with Spanish subtitles. There are several cable companies and DirecTV available. They might have an English news channel. There are lots of small gyms sprinkled around the city. Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

I use bittorrent to download the US, UK, Canadian, Oz, NZ and South African TV programs I want to see. It means that I have to suffer a couple of hours delay if I really want to see the TV news but as you'll discover, few things are rushed in the ROU :-)We have a good gym in Nueva Helvecia so I'd be surprised if there isn't a good selection to choose from in larger cities. The cost of getting a cedula varies according to how you go about it. On a DIY basis it costs a couple of hundred dollars and oodles of patience. Using a non-lawyer facilitator 500 to 1000 U$S and a posh lawyer might set you back a couple of thousand U$S. I used a facilitator when I did mine but my Spanish had improved enough for me to do my SO's a year later. Most people join a "mutualista" for healthcare. They are non-profit health co-ops with their own hospitals, polyclinics and surgeries which are found all over the country. I'm self employed and pay BPS contributions so I get a free mutualista membership thrown in. My SO pays 1, 350 pesos a month for membership of the same mutualista. There are posher mutualistas like the Britanico in MVD and I'm told that they cost more. I'm also told that its possible to take out health insurance cover like they do oop north but I haven't investigated as I get it for free. As for property prices in the nicer parts of MVD... I'm a rural lifeform so I have no idea. |

We visit Montevideo every year and in the apartment we rent are able to get the BBC International News in English on one of the channels. It seem to be the only English channel. |

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. When u say that there are alot of english shows with subtitles... is 'alot' something in the 10-20 different channels, or 20-30 or 30-40 ? Any approx idea ?Thanks again ! |

It is not based on channels, but programs or movies. I never found any lack of programming in English. And most movies in the theater (except kids movies) are in English with Spanish subtitles.Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |
