We did the tourist visa to residency ourselves. You need to know Spanish. It is also probably best to have the Romania documents translated to Spanish by the Uruguayan consul in Romania rather than trying to get it done here. It's mostly a bunch of waiting and nitpicking of the documents by immigration.

If you have friends back home in Romania, they can get most of the documents for you on your behalf and put them through the closest consulate. The only document that could present a challenge would be the police letter... If Romania has consular services here, you can get it through them, or through Buenos Aires.
If you have spent 10 years in bahran... your work experience will also open some eyes at the international hotels here..
What are you doing in middle east? working in hotel management?
(BTW, my grandparents were Romanian.. emigrated to Canada just before he was born :)

Do you know the basic residency process?autheticated and translated copies of:
birth certificate
marriage certificate
police record
income
Where each document has to be authenticated by the consul with jurisdiction where it was issued.
The police record requirements vary depending on ones nationality. Ie: US citizens need the USA plus where they lived the last 5 yeas. Colombians need a Colombian report plus one from everywhere they have ever lived.
I had lived in Costa Rica so they needed a police report from there. They didn't have a method for me to get it, so immigration here took care of that for me and it took a long time.
No idea on that for Romanians.
I have never stepped foot inside an Uruguayan Consul. I always sent the documents via mail.
Whether the Romanian Embassy in Urugauy can help or not... here is their info:
Romanian Embassy in Montevideo, Uruguay
Embassy of Romania in Montevideo, Uruguay
Echevarriarza 3452
Montevideo
Uruguay
City: Montevideo
Phone: (00) (598) (2) 6220876
Email: ambromvd@adinet.com.uy
That's about a 15 minute walk from where I live.
And here is a link to the countries where Uruguay has an Embassy:

I am working in Midle East (Bahrain) as a night club manager at Crowne Plaza Hotel.(not easy as a woman)Regarding aboute the residency process, i would like to ask aboute "income", what means?if i came as a visitor first to Uruguay perhaps i will quit my job here so which income i have to declare?
Comment #6 Lee from Pocitos (Contact Member) - 09/26/07 06:13
I had to show that I had US$500/month of income that was NOT from WORKING. I think they have some options where your income comes from a job within Uruguay. You need to show that you can support yourself which basically means US$500/month of income. The process to permanent residency takes at least a year but would be much longer (almost 2 for me) and another person I talked to said it took him 3.
You'll need to be able to show that income for however long it takes. After you have permanent residency you no longer have to prove your income to immigration.

Come and go or stay for sure. They take your tourist card and you pay 200 pesos (US$8) for a "permission to leave and come back" paper.Someone else better address your questions about work. I suppose if you get a visa to work then you're all set.

So once you get this permission to leave and come back paper, than you are able to come and go as you please, and if so for how many days? Is this pass good for like a year or what? I am confused...

WORK PERMIT IN URUGUAYA foreign national may work in Uruguay under a permanent (Resident) visa, or under one of the temporary visas, for a period lasting the length of the employment contract.
An applicant may work in Uruguay while his or her work permit application and other papers are being processed.
Requirements
A Labour Contract must be executed by the company's Uruguayan affiliate.
The Process
Applicants who enter Uruguay in temporary status may change status to that of resident, provided that the individual has not over-stayed the allowable maximum days allocated as a temporary visitor. The application is made directly with Immigration authorities in Uruguay upon the request of the employee's Uruguayan company.

Kira, Can you follow up regarding working under temporary Visas? I have interns coming down from the US who will be on three month contracts, it certainly seems ridiculous for them to initiate any sort of residency process. But I have been unable to find much in the way of information regarding working on temporary visas. In particular: How do I register these workings with BPS, etc.

I believe that for any time period up to 6 months foreigners can work for a Uruguayan company without a work visa or having to apply for residency. They can work on tourist visas (but they will have to renew after their first 90 days at immigration).
