Wheelchair accessibility/living in Uruguay?

Thank author of this post/comment64 year old paraplegic/wheelchair user. Can push for miles, but must hold on to something to stand [sink/counter/table/grab bars, etc].

The thermal pools in Salta sound inviting.

Would Montevideo or Uruguay in general, be a good place for a person using a wheelchair?

I don't speak Spanish, but can translate on-line.

Thanks for your suggestions..:-)

Hi there!

To be honest Montevideo still needing lot of work when we talk about wheelchairs access. But from a few years ago i can see a difference almost all main streets have wheelchairs ramps, Churchs, hotels and theatres too.

A few weeks ago the municipalty anounced the new busses they bought, all of them with wheelchairs ramps, so, this is not the best city to be on a wheelchair but they are working on that.

I can`t say much about other places in Uruguay because i live in Montevideo.

I live in Colonia Valdense which specialises in care for the aged so you would have thought that good wheelchair access would have been a high priority.

While things are getting better (very slowly) with improved access on pedestrian crossings and access ramps to a few of the stores, its still rather disappointing overall. I've been going on at the junta local for 4 years about putting in a ramp at their offices but like everything in the ROU, these things take time :-)

Gary, it's Salto. Salta is in Argentina (just in case you take the wrong plane). Unfortunately, accessibility for wheelchairs is rather uncommon in Montevideo or anyother place in Uruguay. New government buildings are now offering ramps, but most of them don't. Private buildings are even less caring with accessibility. You get sidewalk ramps in just a few corners at Downtown, but for the most, you have to use garage ramps. The Montevideo city gov started a pilot service a couple of years ago with a few buses along main ave, and they are now bringing in more buses so there will probably will be more lines with accessibility facilities. I think they have passed a regulation so new buses in Montevideo would have to count with this services, but the renewing pace could be slow.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 171471981
