| Voting Info for U.S. Citizens Hello all - I work at the U.S. Embassy and wanted to share information on how to register to vote and request an absentee ballot for the 2012 elections. We are encouraging everyone to register this year, even if you think you are already registered. Some states changed their rules last year and now require a new registration. You can complete the voter registration and ballot request form online at the Federal Voting Assistance Program web site (FVAP). Please google this since I cannot post the link here. Just print the completed form and the envelope and you can drop it at the embassy to be mailed. Note: we will mail voter regsitration cards and final, voted ballots free of charge, but you cannot have your absentee ballot sent to the embassy. There is a dropbox on the gate next to the main embassy entrance where you can drop your voter registration card in the envelope at any time. If you would like voting assistance, you can come to the embassy any Monday without an appointment from 9-11 a.m. or from 2-4 p.m., except Uruguayan or US holidays. I'm planning to come to one of your dinner meetings in March. I'm looking forward to meeting some of you in person! |

Thanks, Natalie, for your posting about voting. I have wondered about how itīs done.Am I interpreting your message correctly that the absentee ballot cannot be mailed to the Embassy but has to be placed in the drop box? I live in Rocha and am not sure I want to take the bus trip for this purpose. Expert Page: Aguas Dulces Cabin Rentals |

The link for the Federal Voting Assistance Program is below... in no time you'll have enough points to add a link... that points think is to keep the spammers out and encourage a bit of participation.I saw a PDF download for "mailing days, " but is there a list of dates for 2012? ie: what is the deadline for depositing the forms at the Embassy drop box? And, I assume "next to the main entrance" means they can be deposited without going through security? Expert Page: Quick Tips for Getting Settled in Uruguay |

Kathy - yes, you would need to have your absentee ballot mailed to your residence (or some states may provide it electronically). But you could use the embassy mail (rather than local Uruguayan mail) to send it back to the U.S. without a postage charge. Ballots (or ballot request forms) can be deposited in the dropbox at the embassy without you having to go through security. For those who live outside of Montevideo, you could also mail your ballot or ballot request to the embassy, Attn: Consular Section (in this case, it's a good idea to write on the envelope "Voting Materials Enclosed"). If you do this - be sure that the actual voting materials are in a sealed envelope inside the outer envelope. We will not open the sealed, voting materials. We recommend registering to vote and requesting your ballot no later than mid July to ensure you receive the ballot in time. We recommend submitting your voted ballot between Oct. 7 (30 days before the election)and Oct. 22 (15 days before the election) to ensure it arrives in time. |
