Using debit cards in Uruguay

Thank author of this post/commentI read here a few weeks ago that cashiers checks are hard to cash. Our local bank suggested using a debit card instead. Do you have many problems using debit cards in Uruguay?

Does anyone know a good place to cash cashiers checks?

Thanks

Jane

Any kind of a "check" will be hard to "cash" in Uruguay. The private banks will accept U.S. checks for deposit. The service charge will be about US$50 and it will take a month for them to clear.

I don't think they will differentiate between a "cashiers" check and a personal check. Of course, in the USA its a bad idea when banks cash cashiers checks on the spot as they is how many of the African scammers rip off Americans.

I asked at Gales in Pocitos once and they said they won't cash any kind of check from the USA because there is no limit to the time in which they can be returned. ie: if they held the check for 1 month, it could bounce in 1 month and 1 day or even a year later.

However, Gales in Centro cashed a check from Google for an Uruguayan for about a US$7 fee and gave them cash on the spot. Though it wasn't a large check just US$100 or so.

I have heard of people that use a type of Visa debit card (Visa electron) but other types I'm not so sure. Some places don't even accept mastercard (only visa!). Uruguay is not a very "plastic-friendly" country, its still very much a cash economy.

I often use credit cards (Visa and/or Mastercard). As Elaine said there are a few places that take just one and not the other. Many smaller businesses don't take either.

Claro refused to take my mastercard once because it was not issue in Uruguay. That was a one time problem (I've never been back there). They are the only place that hassled me over not having a credit card issued in Uruguay.

Most places that sell stuff in Dollars will charge your card in dollars. Mosca seems to be the exception so you lose about 5%.

If something is priced in Pesos you want them to charge your USA card in pesos as your credit card company will give a better exchange rate than the store.

I've never used a debit card, but you probably have no trouble at any of the stores that accept Visa/MC. Of course, you might prefer just to take cash out at the ATM... I think that way less people get to see your card #.

I've never had a problem with someone snatching my card number... and even left my card at a restaurant by accident once.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 1155812898
