Stats from Legatum Prosperity Index Elaine posted the link to the Legatum Prosperity Index; tons of interesting stuff there. I was interested (though not reassured) to see that their remarks and figures about safety and security for Uruguay and the US are consistent with my own experiences and perceptions (my Comment #69 above): Assaults, US: "... only 1% of people report having been assaulted, the fourth lowest rate...." Assaults, Uruguay: "... almost one in 10 claimed to be assaulted or mugged in 2008, ranking Uruguay amongst the bottom 30 countries." Murders, US: "... national homicide rates are high by global standards." Murders, Uruguay: "... at just over five per 100, 000 capita, the homicide rate is relatively low, ranking the country 53rd in the world."
