Spanish Language and Volunteering

Thank author of this post/commentHi all,

My name is Aiman and I am from Jordan. I am writing this post for the second time as it seems the first one hasn't been published.

I am planning of moving to Uruguay on a temporary basis around mid Oct 2011 in order to improve my Spanish skills. I also would like to do some voluntary work while I am there. I can commit myself for a period of 3 months or more, if really needed.

I come across a Spanish school in Montevideo called Academia and they offer volunteering. Can anyone please give me more information about this school and how good are they?

Also if anyone who knows of good Spanish school (which doesn't charge crazy prices) and can arrange FREE volunteering, please let me know. I have a tight budget. I am interested in volunteering in community development, micro-credit, project management, business development, fundraising proposal writing, or any development work. I have master in Public Administration and development and my Spanish language level is good.

Any information in this regard would be highly appreciated.

Thanks to all of you. It is a great forum.

Regards

Aiman

Hi Aiman,

I went to Academia Uruguay 2 months ago and this is a good school. You can expect small class (we were 4 students in my class) and most of the teachers know English or some English to help the students. Students are from 17 years old to 65 years old or more. No discrimination.

Good location of the school as you are just across the Plaza Matriz. They organized some city tour during the week with a guide and conversation course as well. However, I believe this school is more expensive than the other ones but I cannot confirm their level of teaching. I have a friend who teaches French at Berlitz and she confirms that Academia Uruguay is one of the best.

Academia offers volunteering work but only with a medium and + level of Spanish. If you are new to Spanish with basic, you may not join volunteering work. They work with discriminated schools so you need to converse with the kids. This is why Academia asks a good basic Spanish in order to help the kids.

A good way to learn Spanish at a reasonable cost is online using World Word Exchange.

I haven't posted enough to post the link but a search should find it.

All the best.

For the nonspellers: Urugauy and Monte Video is Montevideo (monte-vid-day-o), real estate agents are "Inmobiliaria", and of course Uruguay is not spelled Uraguay. 2461244595
